“if he truly did intend to make an offputting, unengaging record to reflect current times then he definitely succeeded”
I really doubt he thought “2020 is shit so I’m gonna make my album shit too”

"So much of this brought the feels for me (esp. the t/t) whereas Adz felt cold and robotic. I dunno, different strokes I guess."
no idea how anyone could find Adz robotic, different strokes indeed
not to mention parts of this literally sound like an algorithm was fed a bunch of Sufjan Stevens songs and approximated his vocals on top of em lol

I find it robotic because it's so chaotic and haphazard. Goes back to the "thrown against the wall" analogy, there's certainly more personal junctures but the majority feels so over the top in a bad way. Here it's more subdued but that works better for him IMO in terms of evoking an emotional response from the listener. Nothing about this sounds algorithmic lol.

Gonna be interesting when I listen to this as there's no pattern whatsoever to the ratings for this thing. Y'all are all across the board.

Yeah, the range of responses for this record, at least among this site, is so varied it's kind of remarkable. Very few are experiencing this record in a similar way.

One listen in and I have one foot firmly in the "this is good" camp
And I don't think this is unengaging or impersonal at all. Maybe not as immediately intimate as some of his earlier work or Carrie and Lowell, but it's definitely still confessional. I'll also say that for me the juxtaposition of the electronics and lyrics carries the disillusionment so clear in his recent interviews.

Lovely write up. Feels a tad disjointed in places, with some paras not quite linking up, but otherwise is super super.

You're not the one to talk things through
You checked your texts while I masturbated
Caught up in the baby's breath
I shit my pants and wet the bed

on an unrelated note does anyone actually call this guy "soof-yan"? thats like properly pronouncing "bon iver" it's just not done. His name is "suf-jan" as far as I'm concerned, and "bone-E-Vare" is either "Bon-Ive-Er" or "Boner-Bear".
