Sitting in in the dark, a fire blazing together with a single candle lit. Fuck, this is good!

Finally given this a proper listen - overall it’s solid with a few great tracks (ropes into eden and polar hiss hysteria) but the gothic rock sound doesn’t have much resonance with me.

I respect that all of his albums have distinct atmospheres and aesthetics though.

The expectations were set in the stratosphere after Exuvia

Echoing what Senetrix put, the sound design on this album is just flawless. I can’t get enough of these albums lately, there’s so much detail and nuance in the way it’s all put together. It almost feels like he takes an ambient/electronic approach to how he constructs them. There’s one section in the first track where he puts this snare/kick triplet on top of blast beats and that’s typical of what I’d consider to be the RoB ‘sound’, where a sample or a new guitar line will spring up out of nowhere to add another layer to existing ones, giving a really three dimensional feeling. I can’t really think of anyone else who does this, or certainly not so effectively.

Just got back from seeing this band live and I can confirm it's an immense performance.
