Body Language is decent but yeah not my favorite here. Could see it getting stuck in my head for sure though. I don't remember liking Two Graves this much when I listened to it first, but that was on my phone. It definitely passed the car test.

Also major bummer they're only touring east coast. With the '68 too 😔

Yeah I thought Two Graves was a standing ovation. Interested in what you'll think of the entire EP.
Edit: Yeah, bummer. I'm on the east coast, but I probably still won't get the chance to see them unfortunately. If I was in my 20s still I'd be all over that though.

I'm glad they made this album together this time. Their strategy of everyone living in a different city for Lowborn and having the drummer make all the drum tracks first without songwriting didn't work as well as in person songwriting would have worked.

I like the bookends obviously, and track 2 was pretty great, but other 2 were pretty forgettable for me

Can I just state how good it feels to be in the present and seeing a new Anberlin review pop up on Sputnik.
Great review Sowing. I've been iffy from the first couple singles I heard but I'll try be less pessimistic and just listen to the thing with an open mind.

It's so nice to hear new Anberlin material.
Two Graves, Nothing Lost and Circles are as good as they've ever been.

Thanks all!
Agreed with your choices Gyro. I even think Asking is right there with them though. Body Language is the easily the weak link here, but even that song is still catchy. I know it's only 5 tracks, but I can listen to this all the way through without getting even temporarily bored or restless.

Seems really strong on my first two listens but I have a weird issue with it. It could be because they’ve been my favorite band since I was like 12 and are incredibly important to me for a number of reasons, but I miss the “immature” side of the band. This is musically great and the lyrics are of course better than something like “Adelaide” but there’s nothing that gets me incredibly excited/happy like when I hear “Dismantle. Repair.” or “Impossible” or even “Breaking”, even if those songs might be a little more “juvenile”. It’s most definitely nostalgia talking, but no matter how good this is, it seems to be missing that spark that (personally, at least) was there with the run from “Cities” to “Vital”. And I say that while still thinking this has a couple of their best songs. Maybe I’m just growing up, since I was 17 the last time they actually released music. Weird feeling and rants lol

Two Graves rules, not as on board with the electronic pop stuff (didn't like Lowborn at all) but good showing overall

I don't even think it's necessarily that you want immature music per se, it seems like you just miss their happier songs which is understandable. Arguably from Vital onwards has lacked a big time optimistic tune. They seem pretty entrenched in the reverb-drenched electronic stuff, and either they haven't figured out or simply haven't wanted to attempt to gear that approach towards something happy-go-lucky. While I definitely prefer intense Anberlin, I do also miss the occasional 'Retrace', 'Take Me As You Found Me', or the romantic sap of 'Inevitable'.

I can see why some fans of earlier Anberlin may take issue with this. However I love to see a decent evolution of an artists style, and so far I'm really vibing with this.

Gotta agree, I don't much care for Body Language, everything else slays tho.
I think it's mostly nostalgia for me. Nothing on this hit me the same way as Dance Dance, or fin., and I have so many good memories of listening to NTFP, Cities and New Surrender. I don't think I care nearly as much for those whenever I go back to them though. I like this new route they've forged and it does sound matured, to me. I haven't sunk too deep into the lyrics on this yet (the melodies and atmosphere are just so ear catching) but I can confirm that a lot of the lyrics on earlier albums like Cities and NTFP are pretty dogshit overall
