I wonder why they stopped using keys honestly. It fit their sound so well and they really just kinda cut them after estrangement. I think there's some on microcosmos but it's used very sparingly and the last few albums it's been completely gone if I recall correctly

Don’t remember being very excited by the singles but this is really good, definitely their best in a long while even considering their resurgence in quality in the last few years.

Right, didn't think I was crazy talking there lol. Pulled a blackbraid and dropped half the album early.

to be honest, coming from someone who has only dabbled in Drudkh and who certainly is not an authority when it comes to taste in black metal, I found this to be relatively highly enjoyable on first listen... though it does seem fairly accessible by black metal standards... I can hear an elitist somewhere calling this pussy shit or uh not "kvlt" enough, as they say

The kvlt attitude is wildly inconsistent, they'll declare some of the most melodic folksy stuff kvlt but if it has post rock elements then it's false or whatever, there's no tracking what those clowns think.

I think there’s a shift towards accessibility across quite few bm bands these days. The kvlt/strictly underground aspect is possibly less attractive to bm musicians now because black metal is pretty well known overall, social media makes everything pretty public. And black metal bands want to tour and keep writing music just as much as other genres. So small concessions in terms of accessibility probably have pretty huge payoffs in terms of financial support and the ability to keep making music. your average Spotify punter isn’t going to stick around for hyper inaccessible stuff. If there’s no reduction in quality I think accessibility is fine, but if the music becomes boring then that’s a shame

Yeah I don't think the true kvlt black metal elitism is really much of a thing any more

The one thing I love to see more than anything else in black metal is beautifully produced albums where the musicianship can actually shine. I remember saying Nattens Madrigal would bn amazing album if it didn't sound like shit and getting absolutely lambasted for it. I stand by that though.

But when it did exist it was super misguided since a lot of those guys were 2nd wave purists and all the 2nd wave bands they worshipped are made up of dudes that are actually fans of bands like kiss and motorhead lol

@WatchIt I agree although raw production can also be so fkn good when it’s done right and it forces you to listen hard and can be more immersive. I think individual musicianship is becoming more praised in bm, where traditionally the main focus is a cohesive overall energy/atmosphere

There's plenty of examples ofBlack metal albums that benefit from raw production. That one in particular just seems to suffer from it, imo of course

I think that nattens would be perfect with its lo fi production but just slightly less treble overall. Particularly on the guitars of course. Everything sounds pretty decent for bm of that time outside of that and even the bass is clearly audible. I like the bite of the guitar but it could have a slightly more balanced tone

Have you jammed the Nattens remaster
