Fuck. This is like the worst album to listen to when you're down in the dumps over a girl. On top of it being sad, its so damn good.

“Death Wish” makes me want a full-length gothic country Jason Isbell album. One of the biggest growers here.

4.5 bump. This gets better with every spin. An album to live with.

There's a young man cryin' in a cowboy hat,

Got square toed boots so he ain't for real,

Wouldn't last five minutes on a pedal steel

Some nights I dream that I'm in Colorado

Working a cannabis farm

Some nights I dream that the ghost of my mama

Is holding me tight in her arms...

Saw him on Saturday night and he, and the band, were absolutely incredible. Played almost the entire record. White Beretta and Elephant were the highlights for me. But man, Death Wish, Cover me Up, Strawberry Woman, and Last of my Kind were all amazing live as well. You need to go see him on this tour if you have the chance

I say this with a preemptive disclaimer that I am not a Jason Isbell fan nor much of an alt-country fan in general quite honestly. Has some absolutely smashing tracks (Death Wish, Strawberry Woman, Cast Iron Skillet, Miles) with some equally dreadful ones (Save the World, Vestavia Hills, This Ain't It). Everything else ranges from merely fine to good, so I'll have to give this the benefit of the doubt. Too inconsistent for one hour. I could pare this down into a forty-minute stroke of brilliance. For my tastes, anyway.

Damn how are those three songs dreadful?? I love them. Only song on this record that I think is skippable is If You Insist, and even that song is at least okay. Have you tried other Alt country albums?

Sure, depending on how far exactly you wanna cascade that genre label. Jason Molina, Big Blood, Lambchop, Wilco, and Sixteen Horsepower are among the few artists whose releases I generally enjoy (more than I dislike, anyway).

“Middle of the Morning” is one of his very best songs. Don’t forget this album on your year-end lists.
