This album features some of katatonia's more accessible material, as on the catchy 'In Death, A song' and 'I am Nothing', and when they deviate from this catchiness as on the acoustic led 'A Darkness coming' and the powerful closer 'Black session' it sounds even better. The songs in the first half of the album sound strangely similar to one another, but nonetheless it flows very well.

The doom riffs like in Had To (Leave) are awesome. I don't understand why people always cite the vocals as a positive point about this album and Discouraged Ones. Renske had yet to become a competent singer for those two albums, and neither have "good" vocals.
The songwriting and quality of riffage improved quite a bit between Discouraged Ones and Tonight's Decision. The vocals perhaps improved a little bit although they lacked the reverb and quietness they had in Discouraged Ones that helped mask and blend in the softly and poorly-sung vocals.

for some reason I had listened to all the Katatonia records except this one for a long time. finally got around to this now and it's pretty awesome, though the production is lacking.

the 'black session' is by far the best track in this album. the intro's riff is so raw and beautifully heavy. it's reminds me a little bit opeth's blackwater park' (the song btw)
