"Earl is a rap genius. I think he has a TPAB level album in him that he hasn't made yet. Personally, this record is incredibly safe for him and Alchy both though he has some great bars littered throughout, as always."
some rap songs is pretty much on that level for me quality wise... with i don't like shit like a half notch below. totally get what you mean though. feel if he channeled his current sound through a more conventional doris-style album and made his lyrics slightly more approachable he could achieve an album like that. i'm more than happy with what he's been doing though
my only gripe with earl's current approach is SRS was such a perfect distillation of what he's been going for that everything after feels like varying levels of diminishing returns to me by comparison (i do enjoy this more than sick which i enjoyed more than feet of clay)

I think Earl's delivery on the first 3-4 tracks is really lazy, I get he's trying to sound despondent but there could have been more energy/emotion. I think the latter half of the album he picks it up a bit.

I actually found his delivery less lazy here than previous projects.

although I feel like aimless does describe earl's career pretty well. while he's put out plenty of music-good music at that- I feel like he's never really lived up to his lofty potential. I just dont think he cares to take anything in the way of a creative risk and is comfortable dropping these safe short lps. he does have something great in him but im not sure he'll ever get there. SRS was very close IMO but something still felt like it was missing. I dont mind the 4 material but nothing has blown me away quite like EARL did. he'll have one or two songs that are incredible on each release and the rest is just fine.

Same Reich, dude constantly wows me with his lyricism but he’s never quite put a full project that blows me away together since then. But he’s not even 30 yet, my man still has time.

The rest of his career, for sure. I also have to admit that there's a certain charm about him just finding his own lane that he likes and not being too ambitious. It's not like it's necessarily his obligation to bend to our expectations. I just want to finally slap a 5 on one of his records and hear him reach his peak. That's just the hip hop fan in me. Speaking of the Earl tape, though, Luper is still one of my favorite songs he ever did.
