"this is very different to Anna Von Hausswolff but I guess there is some overlap of appeal and maybe aesthetic"
oh look, we're doing this again (independently and to 9/10ths of the same tune of the last time the comparison was brought up)
big no-smoke-without-fire moment - overlap in appeals is most cert there

I absolutely love how moody and trip-hoppy this album sounds

I mean, people make dumb vague comparisons all the time, doesn't mean there's 'smoke' or whatever...
but yeah, they occupy the same space for 'some people'. I'm just defending my rights to independent thought over here

I won't quote my last comment since it's gonna be ignored anyway, so yeah "I absolutely love how moody and trip-hoppy this album sounds" [2]

The Liminal reminds me of Portishead.
There, another potentially incendiary name drop.

hmm, I don't really care about that comparison either way
like, at least make it believable or something idk (and no shut up Johnny, this isn't necessarily evidence that the original comparison deserves credence, lol)

She's popping by my neck of the woods for a gig in May so I guess I gotta hear this.

Well, on a surface level Chelsea, AvH, Portishead = most of the tension comes from the use of fragile vibrato supported by music which can't really be described as uplifting to the point the music often creates a sense of anxiety. Some of the best recs/comparisons come from shallow readings imo.
Btw, Salt sounds like it could have been on Year Zero. Again, surface renderings, embrace intuitive listening!

I'm trying to decide whether this (general) debate is preferable to comparisons based entirely on 'genre'. I'd say genres are more definable whereas this is more vibes / feelings orientated and therefore less definable
unquantifiable boundaries upset poor Demon

sad there isn't an obvious common root to fall back on there, like good ol' d a r k w a v e

darkwave is a vague term in itself to be fair / AVH borrows less from the 'punk / rock side' of those roots. Having said that I'm content we can (supposedly) legitimately assign these terms as it helps alleviate my anxieties. Rejoice!

darkwave is one of the most lopsidedly useful genres re. how accurately it describes the Vibe of artist X vs. how open-ended it is for their methodology
more than anything though, the first couple of tracks are just making me grateful i haven't seen anyone namedropping Reznor. this is a good look for her so far, could see it coming together
