The Witness is something I’ve had stuck in my head for days. I genuinely love that song but the digital laughing kills is so much. If I could change one thing on the entire album it would be to take that out and the track would get bumped up an entire letter grade.

Yeah, I imagine one of them has had a baby and then they do the ol' 'put the baby laugh in the last track' thing so many do.

It nearly always sounds...superfluous.

Was chatting to a friend on FB whilst listening again today. I really don't see how people think this is better than their first 3 or Raw Data Feel.

Wild Guess - 7.5/10

The End of the Contender - 6.5/10

Cold Reactor - 6.5/10

Buddy, Come Over - 7/10

R U Happy - 6/10

The Mad Stone - 6/10 (chorus is 8/10 tho)

TV Dog - 3/10 (would be a 6/10 if it was instrumental)

Canary - 4.5/10 (everything that isn't the chorus is 6.5/10, chorus is 2/10)

Don't Ask Me to Beg 6.5/10 - (chorus is 8/10)

Enter the Mirror - 5/10

Your Money, My Summer - 7.5/10

Dagger's Edge - 5.5/10

City Song - 6/10

The Witness - 7/10 (minus points for baby laughter)

you might just be fatigued with their style...they're churning stuff out at quite a lick

if you genuinely think 'Cold Reactor' is a 6.5 I just get the feeling that's probably an influence

Think they said in a recent interview that they can't afford to take long breaks, which is still wild that they can churn out such good music at a reliable pace but does make it so that fatigue is more likely. Probably gonna skip singles and just wait for their albums if their every 2 years release schedule holds. It's been holding up well, but I definitely find myself really concentrating on the songs for what they are in a vacuum and trying not to draw comparisons elsewhere in their discography

If anything, I think it's the opposite. I haven't listened to EE for at least a solid year before they dropped Cold Reactor. If anything, that's what made me go listen to Raw Data Feel to catch up (I hadn't listened to it when it released but fell in love with it).

I still don't care for Reanimator - that genuinely might have been fatigue.

This is FS not better than RDF. I think I'd take Man Alive too. Arc idk, the highs are better than the highs here, but the lows are pretty low. GTH is just... yeah, I think I've made my position on that one clear lol. Starting to think The Wheel is like a top 5 EE song tho.

Also Enter The Mirror as a 5/10 is fkn crazy to me. What are your RDF ratings? I'm curious

Interesting to hear that Arc is so hit or miss for you - what are thie misses?

tbf Enter the Mirror is probably a bit harsh, there's nothing I'm especially adverse towards (like with TV Dog or Canary) but I just was underwhelmed by it

Oooooh ratings for RDF might need another solid relisten, but weakest tracks for me are Bad Friday and Jennifer - but even then they're 7/10s. It's such a solid album, I don't think there's a single bad or skippable track on it.

The misses are everything that isn't: Kemosabe, Choice Mountain, Radian, The Peak, and Don't Try. Special shoutout to Torso and House Is Dust for dragging the experience down hugely. Dude actually reminds me of that Chiodos singer in the chorus of Torso and it is not a good thing lol. Honestly tho, those 5 highlights... now that I'm thinking about it, I have to put Arc above this for those. Like I think this is more consistent front to back but those 5 tracks are better than the best tracks on here, by a kind of huge margin.

I am REELING that Cough Cough isn't in those highlights. The rest are fair though, and I get the distaste for those two tracks.

That reminds me that I did a list back when A Fever Dream came out... *checks notes*... 7 years ago? Fuck me. I might have to revisit this list again for the latest albums:

'Undrowned' (effectively the Radiohead/Muse song) is my favourite on 'Arc' which I think says it all about my relationship with the album...I don't really get 'Arc', it still has a bit of what I find impenetrable on the debut (them at their most hyper irritating I guess, which can be fun, but basically ALL that album sounds like Gyro's description of 'Torso of the Week' to me) mixed with a background quite bland indie sensibility too ('Duet' is slightly weirder Coldplay etc), it's a strange album.

Really transitional, there are about six or seven good tunes on there so once again they win me over I guess.

All their albums contain filler but still 'Get to Heaven' has the least filler for me and feels the least retread'y (because it was so different to the first two albums)

6.5 is good & above an average grade

With regards to Arc, it's definitely one that took the most time to grow on me. It's definitely one of their least focused albums but I think the majority of it works.

As someone who gave Cold Reactor a 10/10, I think a 6.5 is totally fair. Like I love that song after repeat plays but it certainly doesn’t come across as special as something like Kevin or Radiant or The Wheel. It’s just super fun pop.

And haha JJ I actually do kind of like Cough but something about it bothers me. Will pay attention to it next time I replay the album.

Doof I gotta be honest I find it weird that you think Man Alive is annoying but your favourite song from it is what I consider to be hands down their worst and overall most annoying song haha. I get that the album does have some annoying quirks (again i think a lot of them are contained within Photoshop Handsome), but it has some serious big hits too. Final Form is one of their best tracks, and MY KZ is maybe their catchiest opener. Qwerty Finger is the fun goofy side of them that I like. Idk, there's a lot of breezy and atmospheric stuff on it that I love.

"'Undrowned' (effectively the Radiohead/Muse song) is my favourite on 'Arc' which I think says it all about my relationship with the album."

Better than Radiant!? Sometimes I think their Radiohead worship is superb (The Witness on this is a great example), but Undrowned and Idk, let's say It Was A Monstering represent the boring side of Radiohead worship. I know we have lots of overlap on these guys but sometimes we disagree hard on individual tracks haha
