'They should just drop a whole album with Brandon. Glitching Prisms is amazing' [2]

Gonna be real, I don't think this band works that well with vocals. So much of Night Verses' appeal to me is the instrumental density of the compositions and vibes and those just don't translate as much with vocals imo. I like Incubus but Glitching Prisms is the only song on either part of this that I dislike. His inflection is just kind of weird and I think the chorus is grating. Anthony Green is alright but those two songs are probably the weakest on the whole album to me.

That said, I always appreciate when a band is willing to try wacky shit outside of their beaten path so whether or not I actually like it, I still respect it.

"Willing to try whacky shit outside of their beaten path."

They literally started out with a full EP, and two LP's full of vocals with Douglas Robinson. If anything, the most recent releases are off the beaten path. The vocals should actually be some sort of return to form.

Slow Dose is exactly where it needs to be, and is absolutely gorgeous. Glitching Prisms is followed by X, and Desire, and I think it balances the mayhem well, before we get the explosion which is Phoenix V. To each their own, though.

Yeah, kinda surprised at the Slow Dose slander. I think it's a beautiful song and tucked away nicely in the tracklist before shit gets absolutely bonkers on the final run. As I said in the other thread, I wanna see them work with more vocalists in a guest capacity because I think they could really stretch their legs and go for it. Don't think or really want them to have a full time person though.

I'm not so sure how much I want to listen to this in one full go because I think combined it's a bit too much of a marathon of instrumental wizardry, but it's also about as good as I could ever hope that would be. This was a confusing release structure and they should've committed more to giving pt. 2 it's own limelight if they were gonna split it to begin with. I think Pt. 1 is better, but the high's of 2 might be the best of the whole run. Phoenix V is definitely in the running for favorite song of the year so far, my god

I know that, I mean in the context of what the band is now. I don't feel like this album is just them making Gallery again and I appreciate them playing around with guest singers rather than having one in the band full-time. I probably should have articulated that better.

And just so we're clear, I still like Slow Dose. I think it's a nice pacebreaker before the album goes off the rails with Phoenix V and Anthony's voice adds to the serene vibe of the song. It's really only Glitching Prisms that I don't like.

Either way, this is almost certainly my album of the year, though I wish the band had just released the whole thing at once instead of this awkward staggered release now packaged into one on streaming and the vinyl.

I said this in the part 1 thread but this one is more active so I'll say again, the vinyl does come with this "occipital sound atlas", basically a checklist of intended locations you can go to in order to get the best experience with the album. For example, 8 Gates of Pleasure's pairing is "A canyon, passing through or standing on the canyon's edge". It's a mix of Tool level pretentious self-indulgence and also kind of cool that they gave it that much thought.

Ahh, I hear you Prophet, all good.

I wonder if they went for the softer vocals for a reason? I was at least expecting a track with harsh vocals, seeing the Anthony Green featuring on Slow Dose. If he can pull it off with the mayhem that The Sound of Animals Fighting can be, I feel that would have been a better finish to that song, to split it with soft/harsh, even if it feels like it doesn't really go anywhere for some.

Thanks for sharing that tibit about the vinyl. I have yet to purchase atm.

Makes sense that fans of this album don't like Slow Dose, one of the only songs with atmosphere like Gallery, must have another 4 minutes of repetitive djent riffing instead

I honestly couldn't tell you if I like this more than Gallery or not. I love both pretty equally.

I don't think he would have anything to contribute to the faster or heavier parts.

"Pheonix V" goes hard AF

Rock solid stuff, but the addition of the vocals was unnecessary

Huge fan of both albums. Slow Dose just kinda sucks. Why you tried to dunk on people that like this too, idk but you missed.

Gallery is a bit more cohesive than this, this feels a bit more like a collection of songs. Plus the random songs with vocals don't help that (though I still enjoy them). That being said I still love this lol
