I love when Pikey pwns people.

...I actually don't have this quite as much as I thought I would. I wonder why.

Wow, 45 posts in less than a day? Jeez, Trivium sure is the talk of the town.
Once again ShadowsFallen, you have written an exceptional review. Your opinion was well stated and backed up. I feel this band has become the 'easy to bash band' lately around the Sputnik metal community. I myself am a huge thrash metal fan (old and new) and I find lots to take in on this album in terms of guitar work and drumming. His vocals are not the best but I still think this album is descent enough. They are doing what Metallica cannot do anymore, regardless if they are bluntly ripping them off or not. There has been far worse metal albums that have come out this year, and I really don't feel that this is the worst.
Thank you very much. I'm glad you could see that I wasn't trying to merely anger people over this. When I write negative reviews, people tend to think I'm trying to insult anyone who likes the band, which is not at all true. If you happen to like The Crusade, that's perfectly fine with me, I just like to add my two cents. That's what reviewers are for. :p
I have not listened to this album yet, but based on my past experiences with Trivium, it was actually possible for them to sink lower? Good God...

Great reviews as always, Ben. Bravo.
It's albums like this that really make it hard to admit that the hype doesn't affect people's opinions. Had this album not been hailed as a rebirth of heavy metal and a milestone in technical thrash I probably wouldn't have been so appalled by the music. Unfortunately, that's how things turned out, and I seriously doubt I'll come around from it. Call me a "metal purist", but bands/albums like this really annoy me for the bad light they cast on all of the good metal that goes completely unnoticed.
Remember, Mike, sucking is an abyss. There is no low to which you cannot fall. Trivium have proven this.
Trivium seems to get the slating of there lives on this site, but if people don't like them there free to slate. Although to give an album 1, this must be b incredibly bad. I however reeli liked it so i can see im in the minority. People keep sayin how much they suck i meen if they sucked as badly as most of you say they do i don't know how the hell they've become one of the biggest heavy metal bands in the world. Btw awesome review as im sure everyone else has noticed. This Message Edited On 10.10.06

That's a very good question.

You don't need talent to be famous. Just good PR.

Maybe its you guys who are in the minority for thinking that they suck.

I'm perfectly okay with that. This Message Edited On 10.10.06

That basically sums up my review, except I thought it was terribly obvious that they were trying to be Metallica from the 80's, only more "extreme".

Yeah, there was definitely a hint of Metallica in this one, although unlike most I find that to be an improvement.

Well, given Matt Heafy's attitude, you have to spell "extreme" in bold, red staggered letters with a crude font, and you have to shout it out in a cacophonous, croaking rasp.

Cheesy hostile poses are optional, but help. The overall idea is to gut yourself of all dignity, just like Trivium. This Message Edited On 10.10.06

Don't trust Matt Heafy. I believe he called the intro to Contempt Breeds Contamination Technical Death Metal.

Alex - I thought they MIGHT have tried to write a little bit on this album. Guess I was wrong.

messiah - How the hell are so many pop artists so popular? Musical ability doesn't mean squat with popularity, it's often the other way around. Your level of popularity depends on how much promotion you get. And Trivium get way too much promotion.

There really isn't anything on the album that would merit the description "technical". I'm sure I could play every riff on this album. Granted, I do have a fair bit of experience, but it seems the labels surrounding Trivium blow it up into something far more than it really is.

I try my best. Seriously though, these guys are on Roadrunner, and they take up the whole damn spotlight. I haven't seen ANY other band on Roadrunner get any publicity, and there's a TON with more talent than these guys.

For example, Sanctity. The first time I've heard of them, they're playing at Gigantour, have an album coming out next year, each member does something excellent with his instrument, and they can write. Not one iota of promotion whatsoever. It's sickening.

Mercyful Fate. Why isn't Roadrunner advertising them more? Oh right. They're sound isn't as trendy and they don't have an album on the horizon.

Solid review. I agree with you that the solos can't even save them this time. The solos on Ascendancy fit the songs, but on this album the solos are pure fretboard wankery as if they just figured out they had a "thing" they can play with and realized playing it it was fun. This Message Edited On 10.10.06

Thei level of promotion is one-sided in the amount they get compared to other bands of the genre. Lamb of God and now Shadows Fall are both on full-blown major labels and I still don't hear about either near as much as Trivium, who is on a smaller one. They could at least split things up with other RR bands, such as Opeth and Cradle of Filth, who are both still going very strong and have their own signature voice.
