I'm not a ridiculously huge metal fan, and this is definitely in my top 5 all time list for albums.
My best friend didn't like metal at all (favorite bands: Depeche Mode and A-Ha)... This is also one of his favorite albums of all time.
When it comes down to it, you just need to be able to appreciate music, regardless of style, if you don't like metal much and want to try this out. This is a work of passion; Mikael Akerfeldt is a creative genius and a gift to all of music.
This album blows Ghost Reveries out of the water... Still Life and My Arms, Your Hearse are in the next "Opeth Tier" after this, in my opinion. This Message Edited On 10.30.06

Ghost Reveries is geared more toward metal fans because it had a borderline ambient feel. I'd place GR, this, Orchid, and Damnation alltied for my favorite Opeth. It's impossible for me to choose a favorite.

Regardless of how we order their releases, you all absolutely need to see these guys live. Their show in Chicago at the House of Blues (first leg of the GR tour) was probably the 2nd best show I've ever seen in my life... Mikael Akerfeldt is hilarious and has amazing stage presence.
"This song is about my sexual fantasies with Burt Reynolds"

Some friends of mine went to Gigantour and said Opeth was absolutely huge. One of the best bands there. Plus I would love to see Mikael for the humor.

Yep, humor. Mikael Akerfeldt is a really funny guy when he's speaking in between songs.

Opeth was one of the best bands there. They weren't as good as when I saw them for GR headlining tour, but it's still magical to see them live in any setting.

Reading all the recent comments has just made ma anticipate them even more. Cannot wait to see them live.
This album is exceptional, probably Opeth's best.
As usual SF, a sublime review.

Opeth were incredible live. They performed Bleak and Blackwater Park from this album - was exceptional. Plus, Akerfeldt is hilarious with the banter in between songs.

I would kill to see Opeth live. Some friends of mine saw them on Gigantour and said they were absolutely huge. And with Mikael's humor, it sounds like the best show I could ever see.

Are you really? How sad.
Most all of Ghost Reveries is like a drug for me. That and Damnation could easily garnish 5's from me.
