Their best, but Opeth gets annoying after five songs through.

They do for me >( I can only listen to one or two opeth songs at a time, except for this album. They just bore me after that. :/

It's because its so musically genius it makes your brain explode.:p

Keep trying and eventually it will grow on you. You'll find little parts in different songs that you really like and then you'll be able to appreciate what Opeth are trying to do as a whole better.

It's definitely a great album, but I don't really understand the hype over this.

After I finish listening to the Maiden show I'll give it another listen.

Opeth really takes time to get used to. I had listened to them on and off for years before I really began to notice how good it was.

I don't see the "musical genius" of this. To me, it seems as though the only prog elements they have are long compositions and many different time signatures, and they vary often. I don't see instrumental virtuosity in them either. The guitar work, especially the acoustic work, is good, but not virtuosic. Same for the drums, and I don't know about the bass.

I am not saying they are bad at all, they are all quite talented. I just think they are majorly overhyped.

Are you a musician yourself? If not, it would be very hard to explain this.

I'm not a musician, and I can see that this album is special.

What are you confused about? It wasn't directed to you. I meant that the meaning behind the instrumental quality would be very difficult to explain if he wasn't a musician.

I know it wasn't directed at me, but you don't necessarily have to be a musician to appreciate that a piece of music is technically excellent.

I know that. But some music such as this requires that you view it in lights other than "how fast can they shred/blast" to determine how musically inclined it is.

I think there are a select few bands that you need a musical background to understand and appreciate fully.

I think opeth is one of them.

I'm not saying you can't appreciate them if your not musically talented or whatever, i just think i wouldn't listen to any of the music i do today had i not picked up a guitar or drums.

I guess everyone to their own.

I agree about behemoth, Inferno = God

Opeth arent particularly technical, i guess it's just the way the music comes together with the acoustic interludes and such that makes it so beautiful (well for some people anyway) :pThis Message Edited On 01.08.07

This is hands down one of the greatest reviews I've ever read.

Opeth ruined music for me: it is disheartening to know that you will never hear anything better by anyone else.

If all the music was pushed towards technicality and virtuosic playing, we'd have another Dream Theater borefest. Everything about this album is perfect, however. The technicality and melody balance out better than any album I have ever heard before.
