This album is much more subtle than TDaI, but it still packs quite a punch. However, only time will tell if the songs are as memorable as TDaI.

This seems quintessential Pitchfork bait, yet it continues to elude all mention. What can be said about The Lovers which wasn't said of The Devil and I? There's the same strong vocals rand determined, driving lyrics, the same bittersweet, sweeping and coherent melodies. Repertoire changes appear minimal, with the piano backing gone for slight dips into electronica. Differences? The majestic ensemble sections seen in TDaI's "This is War" take a back seat to a heavier emphasis on intimate guitar verses. This is no less apparent than on rthe outro tracks for the two albums. One is bombastic, with drums blaring, strident. The other is pensive, brooding all but fading as guitar backing plods a ceaseless rhythm. It's a different beast in its subdued, more personal presentation, but it doesn't quite match the grand and coherent melody structure of the TDaI.
