Here, Zorn returns to his infamous 'file-card' technique (used most famously on his late '80s work Spillane), with mostly good results. I sometimes question why Zorn doesn't develop these small pieces of music into full-fledged compositions, because they are seriously good. Jumbled one after another, as the fragments are here, they can lose impact. Note the word can, however. Femina mostly avoids this fate; the first song is especially good, taking listeners on a twisted 11-minute journey. Also noteworthy is "End Titles", a short jazzy tune very much unlike the other three. The performers on this disc are all female; the record is Zorn's tribute to women.
