Review Summary: Deep fried southern fun, but anyone got any Tums?

Yes, I recognize that this album is over a decade old. Remove the Veil was a Christian metalcore band from Alabama, and infused their sound with southern rock undertones, much like fellow Alabamians (Alabamites?) Maylene & the Sons of Disaster. Armed with a unique vocal style, heavy breakdowns, and southern twang, their only album "Another Way Home" remains relevant only due to its simplicity, although it is unfortunately heavily limited in technical skill, relying on too-samey sounding riffs and perhaps the most boring drummer on planet Earth.

Right off the bat with "The Crux", we're introduced to vocalist/guitarist Mark Hendrix's unique scream. Somewhat similar to He Is Legend's Schuyler Croom's whiskey-saturated approach (although ridiculously more limited), Hendrix relies on an animalistic shriek that gives the sound a uniquely wicked but undeniably southern charm. His vocals are what often keep the album afloat in that, although he is often too comfortable and monotone with this approach, it adds oomph when needed. Although not particularly standout, his clean vocals are effective when they hit the sweet spots.

The doom of this album is monotony. The guitarists, although clearly educated on the blues scale, are limited in the sense of just about anything else. Their riffs follow the standard southern rock pattern, and it's often difficult to discern the differences between tracks such as "A Rage Scene Retold", "How to Jump a Ravine", "Watauga", "Wait to Wake", and "The Secret Syndrome" because of this--each song sports a twangy distorted riff in eighth note pattern, that goes up and down the blues scale. Backed also by drummer Mark Coxwell's frankly mind-numbingly monotonous style, it can be argued that this album cannot even meet "average" standards, as I'm pretty sure I can count one one hand the number of fills the guy does. In this right, Hendrix's vocals can be seen as the only thing good about this album.

However, one finds that it is when Remove the Veil dabbles in variety that they are at their best. The wicked, almost blackened approach, of "Vampire," the infectious clean chord structures of "Burn it Down", the catchy clean/harsh vocal approach of "Devil Child", the southern rock ballad nature of "The Revision", and the bluesy acoustic leanings of "Another Way Home" make all of these tracks highlights and keep the album at least listenable. While these tricks have been used by others in better ways by other bands (read: He Is Legend, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Once Nothing, All Hail the Yeti, even Memphis May Fire) Also, if you love breakdowns, dear GAWD you're gonna love this stuff: tracks like "Burn it Down", "Watauga", "Wait to Wake", and "The Revision" feature bone-crushing crunchy brodowns like you wouldn't believe.

At the end of the day, in the wake of Dallas Taylor's unfortunate accident and the Maylene project being put on hold, He Is Legend and Every Time I Die taking progressive directions, and other southern tinged metalcore groups on the out, Remove the Veil revels in refreshing simplicity--just breakdowns and southern flavor. It's like bonafide southern fried chicken: it hits the spot if you've got yourself a hankerin', but will give about the worst heartburn if indulge a little too heavily.

holy shit i can't believe someone is reviewing this. this band was pretty much local to me, and i even worked with their bassists dad at one point lol.

cool review though, and overall i agree with it. I enjoy some stuff from this, but it's kinda flat in a lot of departments, especially compared to their obscure EP that came before this. you should def give that a listen

here is the link. The production is more raw, it has tracks that aren't on here, and imo has the superior versions of the songs from this release

Thanks for the feedback, y'all. That's cool that it's a local group, Gmember! I've had this album sitting around for probably the last 7-8 years as kind of an enjoyable go-to in southern style, so it felt nice to get to listening to it again.

Thanks for the link! I'll defs check it out. If it's an improved version of this stuff, I'm up for it!

Also Fox, Christian metalcore was all I listened to back in the day, so if you need more suggestions, here are a few (Here I Come Falling is a good one btw Gmember): Demon Hunter, Underoath, and Haste the Day (if you've never gave them a listen), For All Eternity, For Today, Silent Planet, War of Ages, Phinehas, Fit for a King, Becoming the Archetype, Zao, Destroy the Runner, Darkness Divided, and Your Memorial are all good ones.

No problem dude! Happy to help!

I can only think of three Japanese metalcore bands: Crossfaith, Crystal Lake and Dir en Grey. Crystal Lake is one of my faves (albums True North and The Sign are killer), and Crossfaith is fun. Dir en Grey hints at metalcore but has doom, nu-metal, and just plain craziness in their sound. Their albums are all different but Ouroboros is a classic!

cool list of bands jacob, i'm familiar with a few but I need to check out more. The crossfaith album 'the dream, the space' is a pretty fun album.

i haven't ever got into dir en grey hard, but i love some stuff from Ouroboros, specifically 'Glass Skin'.

If anyone wants some more really damn good southern tinged hardcore tho you should check out "Von wolfe" https://vonwolfe.bandcamp.com/

Downloading Von Wolfe now! My Dir en Grey experience is about the same; Ouroboros is my jam, but Dum Spiro Spero and Arche are pretty good too.
