Review Summary: Someone forgot to flush
Bandcamp projects have grown a reputation for their wealth of variation, experimentation, and creative freedom that isn’t seen often in independent music distribution sites. However, for every album that pushes the envelope towards genre transcendence, there’s another one that drops the ball. ‘The Ass-Shank Redemption’ is that ball; a poorly contrived blend of country and dubstep that had the spectacular idea to interlace bodily function samples throughout. The ball wasn't just dropped, it was popped, stomped on, and shot down into the Mariana’s Trench like James Cameron’s submarine in South Park.
The Ass-Shank Redemption’s three tracks are just country-esque acoustic strumming over a stock drum beat with interlaced samples of farting, burping, crying and other out of place noises. Occasionally there’s a contrived electric strum here and there but it all sounds like a far more generic version of a song you’d hear on a commercial, except with queefs. This EP’s attempt at branching into dubstep is only on the final track “Ass Gump” and consists of one low quality wobble followed by a man panting, presumably trying to squeeze out the aforementioned monster dook. The samples aren’t even placed properly to elicit a chuckle, such as in “A Clockwork Ass” where a woman begins sobbing (or laughing, it’s honestly impossible to distinguish) over a repeated burp sample that doesn’t even sound like they matched the pitch of the track materials with each other.
Creativity, especially with a musical experiment is often considered to be subjective and not in the realm of possibility for critique. But there was no creativity here; only pain, sharp, smelly, and throbbing pain, making you regret eating that potato griller double soft taco from Taco Bell because you wanted a cheap dollar menu item. This is all of our intestines telling us to go fuck ourselves, and we deserve it. However we can make the choice to aim where we deposit our waste. Make the right choice, aim for the bowl.
