Release Date: 2002 | Tracklist

Their album, Sevas Tra, is a second release by this very young band on the scene. In 2000, Capitol Records discovered them, and they released their first project, an EP called Jihad. After some tour dates in 2001, rumors spread about the cannibalism and mystical arts performed on stage helped push their image through the underground and into the realm of the known. Late in 2001, Terry Date accompanied Otep in producing their first full-length album. With two months to write the music and vocals, they released Sevas Tra in the summer of 2002. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers list, which is a chart of albums that make it just short of the top 100 of the Billboard 200 chart. I have never heard the EP by Otep, but I have to say that I CANNOT get enough of this CD.

With her “in pain” style leading into the most guttural but skilled growling vocals, this is what metal fans crave. Not whiney like many bands today that just sing and bark, but gripping, tooth-grinding riffs and drums that drop the jaw. It starts out with a teaser track with Otep talking about some sadness, and it continues into some ideal chunk and rhythm combined. Track three, called “T.R.I.C.,” which is also the last track on the Jihad EP, starts with a big bang and unleashes the remarkable flow ability of Shamaya. “My Confession” slows it down a bit, but it still hits hard. One thing I really look for on any metal album is a dope riff that makes you want to rewind and play it again like two or three times every time the CD plays. “Menocide,” track eleven, brings it with force deep into the track, so get ready. Some tracks aren't even songs; they are so we can feel the pain and suffering that leads to the web of words she uses to write every song. No simple matter are the lyrics on Sevas Tra, but they are impressive and complex. However, the music behind every poem couldn't be any more talented and ass-kickin’ than what is available to us on this CD. Track six, “Battle Ready,” will hit you like a ton of bricks, pick you up, and hit you again. How will they ever follow that act? According to Otep herself, she says that Sevas Tra is the story of the agony of life and the sweet surrender to ones’ own demons and then victory through self-destruction.

In general, Sevas Tra by Otep in my opinion is one of the absolute best arrivals in metal since the new millennium began. No idea on when another album will surface, but I hope it is soon. I definitely recommend picking up this album if you like to head bang to some bad-ass ***. SICKNESS. PERFECT. LOVE IT.

5/5

Seriously, you have submitted about 5 or 6 reviews since I was on the last time yesterday, and rated about one or two not 5-Stars. You have to get more distant and objective with reviews. Sure, what one thinks about a CD s subjective in the end, but one can limit the 'fanboy-ism'.

The review is ok but I think it is easier to read when you hit the enter button every now and then.
No, this CD is one of my personal favorites. It has so many good songs on it, how could you not like it?
Blood Pig
T.R.I.C.
My Confession
Battle Ready
Filthee
Posession
Menocide
There is such a great line up. Plus it is like their only "full" album that has over 10 songs. "House of Secrets" had more than 10 but at least half of them didn't contain instruments.

I've only heard one song by Otep, Blood Pig.

I thought it was a guy at first...their singer has a beastly voice.

Anyway, it was good...I've been meaning to pick some Otep up. This review shows me I should get this one.

I could never get into otep. They aren't very good, defintly NOT 5 stars. Also their name seems a lil too close to Opeth.

Yet another record to fuel your female-fronted-band obsession.

We need a rule that plainly states,

No fan based reviews
No fanboy reviews
No fangirl review just to be fair
Of course people will put how they feel into a review, but try to be objective. Talk about the band and music. Not give me ten reasons why you love each sub-point and every little bit of the album.

Seriously! All the time, if I say something about Opeth, they go "Ooh ooh! Otep. They rock!"

Sigh... Opeth is better than Otep. I should send them all home with a copy of Blackwater Park, and off to bed without supper.

Bloodlined Calagriphy pwns these guys as far as a female vocalist that sounds like a man half the time.

It is very rare that I can't stand a band. This band is one of those rare occasions.

This review shows promise, just more info needed. I will agree with Ocelot-5, Opeth is alot better then Otep, they have more depth, talent and variety, these guys are just like every other metal band. Nothing spectacular.

While i don't like their music very much the meaning to some of their songs are good, like Warhead. It was easy to understand what they were getting across

i personally think the singer for Otep is a pretty bada*s chick. She's one of my fav. chick vocalist of at the moment. Im not too fond of this review though. It seems rushed, and a little bias.
I've never listened to this album though, I have House Of Secrets, which im thinking about reviewing. Despite the neg. comments i'll get about "Otep." This Message Edited On 08.06.06

the songs sounded better on the EP, they did some weird shit to a couple of the tracks and screwed them up. blood pigs is pretty cool though.
