Review Summary: This is awesome for the first five songs, and then just gets old. Of all of the genres of alt/Indie, my favorite is indie pop by far. What’s the reasoning behind this? Well, first, the genre is incredibly accessible, while at the same time amazing musically. Also, the genre is influenced by 60’s era baroque pop, but also has some modern ambient influences and at times experiment structures and build-ups, which I can appreciate if done properly. This brings me to my final reason for liking indie pop is it’s incredibly fun to listen to. This now brings me to Australian solo artist Lenka Kripac. As an indie pop artist, she is not cutting edge in the least, but what she does bring is some of the most accessible indie pop known to mankind.
From the very start of the album, her soothing vocals calm your ears, establishing a tonal quality she maintains throughout the album. On the other hand, the songwriting on the album is mediocre at best. The songs just seem to repeat the same recycled ideas over and over again, and while it’s fun for maybe the first 5 songs, it gets old after that stretch of time. Other than a few songs, the album doesn't really stand out as innovative and cutting edge, or even really indie in a sense. The tunes on the album are mostly just pop songs with some Beatles influence, and as sweet as they are, they really don't stand out in the crowd. The instruments on the album are the same as any other pop record, piano, acoustic guitars, drums, the works. On the this record the piano is the leader of the pack on the album, and while the piano does play simple stuff for the most part, the tunes they play are enjoyable for moments. Acoustic guitars are used for ballad songs, such as the joyfully slow "Knock Knock". For the most part, the instruments just lay low and play simple stuff, but like the opener "The Show" and "Knock Knock", they can become the backing for enjoyable songs.
Another problem that people may have with this album is the production, because at times the album feels over-produced. This, however, is also a positive for the album because it gives it a candy-like feel when listening, and for a lot of pop fans that is a major plus. So to summarize: with her self-titled debut, Lenka Kripac has managed to make some of the catchiest and most enjoyable indie pop in a while, but at the cost of interesting songwriting and originality. Still the album is a fun listen every once in a while, and can be enjoyed by nearly anyone.

I always thought we could turn Bastard into a naturalized Aussie.
Decent review Max, as you outline the positives & negatives clearly enough. Although, some sentences don't really flow all that well (especially in the first paragraph).
Lenka is not all that big at all as yet down under, but she is getting a name for herself gradually.

It was a kid's show, yeah. I was a kid when it was on.
Lenka was a co-host on it. She was also in the Australian film The Dish, and has guested on albums by Decoder Ring and paulmac.
