Review Summary: Adelitas Way may be "feeling invincible tonight", but that doesn't mean that they actually are.

Ever since the explosion that came in the early 90s with Nirvana's Nevermind, many grunge and post grunge bands have always seemed to be in a race to completely rule the revamped rock world through the radio. With slight variations that are all but nonexistent, bands like Creed, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, and 3 Doors Down have resigned themselves to record the same record repeatedly throughout their career, spawning singles that follow a repeated formula. In short, it’s quickly become a game of not what a band of this type can bring new to the table, but of how well the band follows this quest-for-radio-glory format.

Adelitas Way is the next band to enter the competition for the prized post grunge throne. The band follows the aforementioned formula almost perfectly: the singer is gruff, the songs beg for radio attention, and the lyrical subjects go no further than girls, male testosterone, and parties. I believe Adelitas Way know what they are getting themselves into, and for what it is worth, they are fairly confident in their recycled efforts. Lead single and opener “Invincible” is the sound of a band that think they’re unstoppable – a so-called anthem if you will – and the band attempts to keep this unjustified pretense throughout this debut album.

The album carries the expected ballads that are contrived and created for the lovesick as heard on “All Falls Down”, “Last Stand”, and “Closer To You”. While these offerings play like replicas of the hit singles taken off Nickleback’s All the Right Reasons, I do have to give the band some credit in their throwback to the 80s. In short, Chris Lorio is quite efficient when it comes to concocting power ballad guitar solos. “Scream” and “My Derailment” follow the heightened male ego complexes that were displayed in the opener. The prior’s lyric arrangement of: ”I can make you scream, how I live my life, when I have no choice,” comes off as rather random, seemingly making no sense whatsoever. What’s more, the latter song borrows a little too much from Avril Lavigne’s own song, “My Happy Ending”. The riff is nearly a perfect copy of the singer’s hit single, and both of the chorus melodies are extremely similar as well. “Brother” closes off this rehash with a tale of the singer’s brother, and how Rick DeJesus himself doesn’t want to waste his life and repeat the same mistakes. If Rick DeJesus really means the words he sings, then why exactly is he in this band making recycled music?

Adelitas Way’s self-titled debut will in all likelihood earn them a place next to the aforementioned leaders in the mainstream rock genre. That being said, it will not earn them a place with bands that make good music. The formulas to be found here are already rehashed by better bands out there; what’s more, these other bands are more believable in their delivery as well. The end result feels tired and far too calculated - a Nickelback 2.0 is what comes to mind – and if you are a fan of this type of music, you would be better off with listening to the bands who did it first.

The recommended by reviewer/members also liked section is somewhat lethal

Yeah. What's worse is that those albums are better than this.

Ugh, okay not going to check this out. The new Default album was about as much regurgitated mainstream rock as i can take in one sitting.

In other news, how the hell did Appeal to Reason end up in the members also liked? random.

Yeah, that's a bit random. I think I saw Paramore's Riot! in there as well.
Those things usually aren't trustworthy.

finally someone reviewed this i submitted it like a decade ago

like the CD but yea, its like every band that played cruefest wrapped into one...

the dude can solo fine tho...their fast songs are catchy as hell but when they slow it down = super lame

if i was still rating things, i'd throw a 2.5 or a 3 on it

You feel I am trying to decieve people?

I respect your opinion by the way - I'm just curious.

Not "deceive" people. You just create this phenomenon that never actually happened in order to transition into a discussion of crappy radio-rock. I completely disagree that the Nickelback's of the world are a response to Nirvana's success...

also, you have some grammatical problems

Hmm, I can see why you might see it that way. However, I was always told that without Nirvana there would be no Nickelback's.

Oh alright, which grammatical problems? I'm always trying to improve, and thanks for the constructive criticism.

I just don't get the jump from one to the other.

on the grammar issue, you have some temporal confusion. For example, your first sentence reads:

"Ever since (noun) in the early 90's (subject) have always seemed ... the now revamped...as some now call it."

Would be better: "Ever since...in the early 90's, (subject) have attempted... the revamped..."

the overuse of "now"s and "always" creates a lot of confusion.

Alright, I'm looking back over it with the corrections you mentioned, and I think you're right. I'll try to fix what I can, though I'll probably keep the introduction as that still makes sense to me.

Thanks. Most users wouldn't have been as honest as that in giving me criticism.

that is the truth there, but I thought it was a good review as always. Gonna pos this, Gregory.

Thank you Styles. I'm glad theacademy here was able to give me some pointers despite the neg. There's nothing to do except learn from mistakes I suppose.

ouch.

not listening to this. 12 Stones and Egypt Central have taken my interest away from radio-rock (apart from Three Days Grace and Finger Eleven).

somehow EVERY band in this genre, apart from the above two, sounds EXACTLY the same, and they all sound like Nickelback. the other day my friend was listening to this band, and I asked her if it was Nickelback, and it wasn't. It was 3 Doors Down. Which means 3DD are now sounding exactly like Nickelback.

oh well, long story short, good review, and pos'd.

I agree with almost everything you said. I used to love this kind of music. Its still ok to have around every once in awhile when I get into my drunken frat boy mode. Dirty Little Thing is probably the best one on here.

@theacademy: Okay, I tried this, not too impressed. The first couple tracks I liked, and Brother was a pretty good closing track, loved the ending solo. But this is really unoriginal, I mean you're right that the guy can solo, but most of what's on here has been done before. The power ballads are pretty weak, one sounds like Daughtry (who I do actually like).

I have to disagree about the lyrical makeup of their songs. They are not about girls as objects,

bitches or anything of the like. Mostly he is desperate to keep his relationship in tack, and the

emotion in their songs I feel is genuine. As for the song about his brother, imagine how difficult it

had to be to write it. No these guys are not political or philosophical, but they do wear their

emotions on their sleeves.
