Review Summary: Makes me want to invent a time machine. There are not many albums this year that have truly, deeply knocked my socks off. Crown Lands’ Fearless is one of them. Check out that album art — glorious. Also, it is entirely on point. “*** it, let’s resurrect old school prog rock” is the made-up quote that will usher you into this review, because let’s face it, Crown Lands are not of this era. You can tell by the art, but the music is enough to make you wanna camp and smoke doobies with friendly bears. “Make love, not war, and also make prog rock”, should be their motto and oh manohboy you are in for a mouth waterer.
The first track in the album is over eighteen minutes long — the next one is a little over three minutes. There is no difference, it’s the same tasty classic rock. Okay, there’s a massive difference actually (gotcha). One is more single material and classic rock radio fodder, and the other is pure Rush worship. One may think becoming a much beloved band - but a false version - would not bode well. Instead, Crown Lands are the new Rush of our age.
This is classy classic rock alright. You may hear futuristic cosmo synths, and epic drum fills. Lest we forgot that tin can, melodic guitar tone (love it, though I’m not sure about this analogy). Some of you young hooligans may ask dumb questions like, “Why does the singer sing so high?”, and “Where are the trap beats and Olivia Rodrigo feature?”. Shut up man, let the vibes hit your brain, man, I think I can see Venus hugging the world, dude. Whooooah. Indeed, this album is a new drug.
If the first three paragraphs didn’t make my points clear enough, allow me to reiterate, but with additional bluntness. Crown Lands are an old school prog rock copycat that sound great and do great, but also sound like a copycat. You have heard music like this before, and you have heard it better because try as they might, Crown Lands still exist in 2023 and are not the original copy. They are a copy of many copies — copy that? Also, the production is so squeaky clean it’s like manufactured windows, with no blemishes or fingerprints or sign of wear and tear. It’s lovely, but it doesn’t have a lived in feel. The big however, however, leads the band to victory. Great choruses, intriguing songwriting, and sausage squeezing vocals await! They may be in the wrong era, but this type of music remains a feel-good, rockin’ experience.

With the guidance of acclaimed producers David Botrill (known for his collaborations with Mastodon, Tool, Peter Gabriel, and Rush), Terry Brown (renowned for his work with Rush in the 70s), and Nick Raskulinecz (credited with artists like Rush, Mastodon, Ghost, Alice in Chains, and Deftones), the album serves as a natural evolution from their previous work, "White Buffalo." Kevin and Cody, the remarkable duo behind Crown Lands, have crafted a powerful and symphonic sound that unapologetically pays homage to Rush during their prime. It comes as no surprise, as their deep admiration for Rush (with Kevin being a neighbor and friend of Geddy Lee's technician) shines through, alongside influences from other iconic acts like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Neil Young.
"Fearless" showcases a remarkable collection of songs that have garnered overwhelming praise for this Juno Award-winning band, who claimed the prestigious prize just two years ago. Each track is a testament to their immense talent and unwavering musical prowess. With this album, Crown Lands firmly solidifies their place as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. Here's to a long and prosperous journey for Kevin and Cody. It's an unequivocal 5 out of 5 stars.
