Review Summary: Unsane deliver a stronger, darker album despite line-up changes and death of band members.
For those who don't know, Unsane is one of the more violent bands to come out of the New York noise scene. There was an album before this, their famous self-titled disc and their drummer had died a year of the first cd was complete. This time, they replaced their former drummer, Charlie Ondras, with Vinnie Signorelli of Swans fame. Their style had changed a little bit from the last album, but not too significantly. Unsane at this point consisted of
Chris Spencer-vocals/guitar
Pete Shore-bass/vocals
Vinnie Signorelli-drums
This cd differs somewhat from their last album in that the songs are more based on slower, heavier Black Sabbath-mixed-with-punk riffs. The songs are slower and heavier and are harder than ever before. The Album kicks open with the song
Body Bomb which contains a pounding, relentless riff and mixed shouts and screams from Pete and Chris. From there on, Total Destruction just gets better.
Road Trip has catchy riffs and abrasive vocals and appears later in the album. Another good song is
Wayne with its fast-paced and incomprehensible vocals.
The guitar work on the album is heavier with more palm-muted riffage. There are less distorted guitar solos, but the solos that are on here are really well crafted.
S.O.S. has a ripping bluesy solo near the end which ends the song on a high note. The riffs are well-made and are bound to stick in your head
The bass guitar is just a tad quieter this time around, but it still plays the role of a second guitar. The bass has a heavy sound and always keeps a rhythmic shuffle despite changes in the music. The drums, done by Vinnie Signorelli this time around, are not as tribal, but they keep the rhythm well and really add to the songs in certain moments.
I coldn't find anything wrong with Total Destruction except that if your not a fan of aggressive music or louad, noisy songs, then this won't appeal to you at all. Other than that, i found the cd to have well-crafted songs and sharp moments that will put a smile to your face. Check this out if you want to get into Unsane or noise-rock.
