4.5 superb | FLRTE | January 17th 11 | Pale Saints is the forgotten band of the shoegaze genre, and this is their best album. They use subtle arrangements and elusive melodies that gets you on a trip, floating, like only shoegaze can do. But what I really like with this band is that they never fall into a kind of "shoegaze cliche" of silly dreampop songs. Ian Masters' voice is angelic and unique, following weird melodies and unpredictable changes. The overall effect is often on the edge between the comfort of the unreal and the harshness of reality. There is 3 songs with the female voice of another Shoegaze band: Lush, but the best tracks are definitly those with Masters leading the ship to unknown places, especially: "Shell", "Hunted", "Hair Shoes" and "Neverending Night", all these song are among the best in Shoegaze history, as well as the album.

2.5 average | Gene Gol CONTRIBUTOR | May 5th 24 | Dime-a-dozen 90s dreamgaze, but at least it has a nice few ambient atmospheric interludes and mixing choices.

4.0 excellent | FoodBankGetsMoney | May 29th 12 | The Pale Saints are often forgotten about when discussing shoegaze in early 90s Britain, often sidelined for discussion about Ride, Slowdive, and those Irish guys that were on that Bill Murray movie, they made the album with the pretty pink guitar cover. Hell, freaking Chapterhouse gets more discussion than them (and I like Chapterhouse). But The Pale Saints don't deserve to be a footnote when discussing the great genre of gazing. They leaned more towards the dream pop side of the shoegaze spectrum, the swirly, dreamy, flangey, Cocteau-y, fluffy, poppy side. This album is filled with dreamy soundscapes and well crafted pop songs, the vocals aren't buried in the mix like a lot of shoegaze, they're actually kind of clear on a lot of tracks. Lead guitar riffs are prominent here, a rarity in the genre. Fine tunes, check it out if you like Lush or anything of that sort.
