Review Summary: A band that doesn't do much to separate from the crowd, but that doesn't mean there isn't a gem or two...
Mainstream music isn't one hard to analyze. Why? Well, for the simple reason that it follows a certain pattern, a certain skeleton, and that's exactly what It's Alive does. Take what's already been done, and just add their own touch, own flavour some might say, and compose a record. That's not to say its bad, since mainstream music certainly appeals to a lot of people, and there should be some sort of reason behind it. But in the end, its nothing memorable, nothing unique, nothing....artistic.
Opener
The Bottom is a clear indication to what one should expect. Vocalist Zach Webb has that perfect smooth, yet rough at instants, voice to turn a bland song into something more, somehow reminiscent of Chester from Linkin Park. The instruments compliment the vocals well enough, but leaves you wanting more. Typical lyrics follow suite, ranging from love, to, well....love again! General teen-angst is as expected. Song writing is nothing spectacular, with the usual verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus formula, but a few transitions make for an enjoyable listen. A strong feature on this album is definitely the catchiness factor, each song somehow has an excellent hook, and while being a bit repetitive, it won't stop you from singing along the songs. In a nutshell, It's Alive is typical mainstream rock.
But I in no way wish to take away anything from It's Alive's great moments.
Pieces is a definite fan-favorite, with a tune that can't get out of your head,
Questions features a short but sweet solo.
Dialysis has lyrics about fighting drug addiction, a huge problem in today's society. Closer
Can't Love Me is an excellent way to end the record, with the synths creating a sort of ambiance, and a female vocalist featuring.
At the end of the day, It's Alive is just another mainstream rock band that has an edge over its counterparts largely thanks to Zach's vocals; it doesn't offer anything new, or anything to make you go in awe, but a good record to check out if into the genre.
