Review Summary: A damn fine record by a hell of a band unfortunately neglected outside of Québec and French-speaking Canadians./ Un effort incroyable par un bande incroyable qui est maladroitement négligé au dehors de la Québec et les Canadiens qui parlent la Francai

Les Colocs are a band that I feel are shamefully overlooked outside of their native Québec, and this album is the pinnacle of their collective talent and would unfortunately be their last.

The group's second and final record, "Dehors Novembre" is a clever, funky and moody album that mixes a sense of overwhelming existential dread with a kind of slick wit and cynical humour that could only come from the French. The founder and lead singer, André "Dédé" Fortin, writes with a kind of sarcastic tone that captures the essence of the conflicts going on in his head perfectly. Tracks like "La Maladresse" feel gloomy and dirty, as if they had been dragged through the muddy recesses of Fortin's head whereas tracks like the reggae and blues inspired "Tassez-vous de d'la" capture his more playful nature as a songwriter. Truly, Dehors Novembre is an adventure through the various emotions of a terribly depressed man.

The record isn't without flaws, however, as this conflicting nature throughout the album leave it feeling a tad disjunctive and inconsistent at times. The transition from funky tracks like the afformentioned "Tassez-vous de d'la" into the very gloomy "La Maladresse" and "Le Repondeur" and then back into a more funky reggae inspired sound in tracks like "Tout Seul" leaves the leader feeling confused, as if Fortin wasn't quite sure what kind of record he wanted to make (the random English sung blues track "U-Turn" also confused the *** out of me, good as the track may be). But, despite the inconsistencies in genre every track is enjoyable and memorable. I believe this is the record's saving grace, and it's because of this that the essence of the chaos of emotions put into the record is captured well without just feeling senselessly inconsistent.

In all honesty, not too much can be said in regards to "Dehors Novembre" without me telling you, very simply, to purchase this album however possible. In early May of 2000 André Fortin tragically committed suicide and truly, the band died with him. If anything, give this record a listen to hear the last efforts of an incredible musician.

Partial error on my end, I wrote leader because as i was writing this I believe I thought reader and listener at the same time. Highschool English paper writing has permanently fucked my head, I fear.

Not a grammar Nazi or anything but this sentence in the summary hurts my brain.

The english portion of this review is very well written, but the French seems to be a too literal translation of english and in consequence a lot of the sentence structure suffers and some of the wording make no sense at all.

examples :

Yes I agree with grandbazar, it shows that French is translated from English. A lot of French sentences need to be corrected. I could give you some help if you want since I'm a French speaker.

Your English review is all right and complete enough. You clearly describe what kind of sound the album offers, and you talk about the songs just enough to let us a good idea about them. Finally you tell us about the fragile state of mind of Dédé Fortin which eventually led to his suicide and to the end of the band shortly after.

Great first - English - review. I'm glad to see this being reviewed. Pos'd...And I consider to giving the album a 4.5/5.

@grandbazaar, are you sure about your rating? Cos the album contains a lot of gems that probably need more time from you to appreciate. I thought you gave the rating a bit quickly, can it be? Just saying...

Btw, it's a good idea to put on the review in both languages. I was hoping to see it in French at first, so yes. And welcome to the site.

Stunning album. La maladresse and U-turn are somewhat filler for me but the rest is amazing. The lyrics throughout the album are particularily gripping, the whole thing basically reads as a suicide letter

Thank you for the feedback. I concede in my rush to complete the French portion I lazily threw it in Google Translate. I'm afraid I'm not quite as confident in my French writing as I would like to be. I can comprehend french and hold conversation well enough but to actually try and write it myself is a challenge and I apologize for that. I didn't do the language justice.
