Review Summary: ear rape can be enjoyable.

To be honest, the first time I listened to this album I nearly vomited. This is the kind of the album that requires multiple listens in order to make any sense. Basically a thrash metal album converted into 8-bit format, there is nothing easy about it. It’s obscenely loud, and the fake drums provide a constant onslaught with which to scare off the weak. Are you looking for a soothing musical experience which you can share with your new baby girl? This is the complete opposite. This is a complete train wreck and it even sounds like it – prepare to be sonically raped. What’s that, you don’t want to get raped? That’s too bad, because rape is totally all about the absence of choice.

Underneath the brutally irritating noises are songs that are actually decently written, believe it or not. One can easily imagine someone singing or shouting along to the tunes if the music is given a little time to sink in. However, melody is unimportant to the album, and all focus is given to thrashing. Songs have multiple sections just to give the 8-bit guitar enough room to noodle about, and noodle it does. I must mention again that this is an actual thrash album, but it just so happens to be in 8-bit format. Actual guitar riffs are had, just on a videogame worshiping, Super Mario licking level. It really does sound like Zelda being smacked repeatedly with a wooden spoon. If that is your personal fetish, you will be enticed by the sexual bliss of this album.

“Geewhiz, an 8-bit album!” sayeth the people, but unfortunately, Algid Doom (8-bit) does have its flaws. For starters, it’s only really six songs long. In these six songs, two of them are wanting in the same way that a headless man wants a new head but can’t get one – that leaves us with four good tracks. At this point you’re wondering if the album is worth listening to - at this point I tell you that it is. It isn’t easy on the ears, but it is easy on the heart. There is something endearing about the ridiculous, non-stop noises that enter your ear canal and start drilling. There is something to be said about ear rape of this fashion. It is quite enjoyable.
