Heavy D and the Boyz were a pop-rap group from NYC that formed in 1985. In 1987, they became the first rap group to sign to Uptown Records, which would go on to become a label that released numerous legendary albums in the rap and R&B worlds. Later in 1987, the group released their first album “Living Large”, which was a commercial flop. They then released their follow-up album in 1989, “Big Tyme”, which proved to be their first massive hit, breaking the top 20 Billboard chart.Heavy D and the Boyz would go on to become one of the most popular rap groups of the early 1990s, with their poppy, dancey sound being a groundbreaking alternative to the more popular rugged norm of rap music.
