Slipknot's mix of grinding, post-Korn alternative metal, Marilyn Manson-esque neo-shock rock, and rap-metal helped make them one of the most popular bands in the so-called nu-metal explosion of the late '90s. But even more helpful was their theatrical, attention-grabbing (some critics said ridiculous) image: the band started wearing masks when Shawn (AKA Clown) brought in a old clown mask that he had bought as a kid. One thing led to another and soon all nine members were wearing masks on stage, as well as adopting the numbers zero through eight as stage aliases. Rumors say that Corey Taylor's new mask was inspired by a chainsaw weilding maniac known as Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Controversy related with the image erupted throughout their career. This included Mushroomhead fans claiming that Slipknot stole their image and Slipknot filed a lawsuit against Coq Roq, claiming that the advertising based band capitalized on Slipknot's image.
Add to all this a lyrical preoccupation with darkness and nihilism, and an affectionately insulting name for their fans ("Maggots"), and Slipknot's blueprint for nu-metal success was set. In summer of 2004, Metallica's Lars Ulrich suffered a health scare and Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo from Slayer filled in for Lars. Slipknot is currently on hiatus, although a new live DVD is in the works. Singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root have been using the time to work on their side project, Stone Sour. « hide |
