Machine Head is a thrash/groove metal band founded in 1992 in the wake of (guitarist/vocalist) Rob Flynn's departure from Vio-lence. After signing a record contract with Roadrunner Records in 1993, Machine Head released their influential debut album Burn My Eyes, which sold over 500,000 copies worldwide and was Roadrunner's best-selling album until 1999. After drummer Chris Kontos left the band in 1995, Dave McClain joined in and the band subsequently recorded a second album The More Things Change in 1997, which was slower and more groovier than their last album. The band's next two albums, The Burning Red (1999) and Supercharger (2001), were based in nu metal. After Machine Head was dropped from Roadrunner USA following the disappointing sales of Supercharger (in the wake of 9/11), the band returned to their thrash sound with Through The Ashes of Empires in 2003; the album's success in Europe led to the band re-signing with Roadrunner USA. In 2007, the band released their most critically acclaimed album, The Blackening, which combined progressive metal with thrash metal. After the release of Unto the Locust in 2011, Machine Head left Roadrunner due to a shakeup following the label's acquisition to Warner Music Group and moved to Nuclear Blast Records. The band's first album on the label, Bloodstone and Diamonds, reached number 21 on the US charts and is their highest charting release there. Following the release of the non-album single "Is There Anybody Out There?" in 2016, the band released Catharsis in 2018; its more political overtones divided fans and critics. The band then spent the next four years releasing non-album singles, including "Do Or Die" (a failed comeback at the haters of Catharsis), "Circle The Drain" and the Civil Unrest and Arrows Like Wounds To The Sky EPs. The band will release their tenth album in August 2022, titled Of Kingdom and Crown. « hide |
