Kevin Gilbert might have been the next big thing in commercially-friendly progressive rock had his life not been tragically cut short in 1996. In

Kevin Gilbert might have been the next big thing in commercially-friendly progressive rock had his life not been tragically cut short in 1996. In
the late 80s he formed the prog rock group Giraffe, but soon disbanded the group to concentrate on his myriad of projects. He went on to act as
a producer and session musician for a range of artists such as Madonna and Keith Emerson. After writing the bulk of the songs for his then-
girlfriend Sheryl Crow's debut, Gilbert struck out as a TV and film composer, songwriter, and accomplished multi-instrumentalist.
He released his first solo album Thud in 1995 and reformed Giraffe to perform Genesis' concept epic The Lamb Lies Down on
Broadway at Progfest '94. These two events made him a rising star in the progressive community, and a newly Collins-free Genesis
auditioned him to be the new singer. He actually got the job too, but when a friend came to tell him the good news, he found Gilbert dead of
autoerotic asphyxiation. 4 years after his death, friend and Spock's beard drummer Nick D'Virgilio helped finish Gilbert's incomplete follow-up,
the concept album The Shaming of the True. Its release cemented Kevin's talent and made his loss all the more tragic. While he died
without a lot of material, what he did make is worth the time of any fan of crossover prog. « hide |
