First off, I would just like to say Excellent sax playing from zorn. This album carries Visceral aggression at times, but also relaxed yet ominous atmosphere at times. The basslines on this album do a great job of setting a tone, and the vocals, while sparsed, are extremely throat shattering and savagely violent. There are a few forgettable tracks on this 12 track record, but after several listens the replay value is still pretty strong. It's strange, it's unconventional, it's atmospheric, it's great, it's zorn. While it's not my favorite painkiller album, it's still undoubtably great.

Great sax playing, and the vocals are awesome too. A nice atmosphere is also present on some of the tracks ("Portent"). However, too much of this record just feels like abrasive randomness, or jam sessions, with little replay value. Maybe I just don't completely 'get it.' Overall, Guts of a Virgin has less variety and is slightly weaker than Buried Secrets, but fans will probably enjoy it nonetheless.
