| Emo Kindling
My humble emo beginnings. | 1 | | Hot Cross Cryonics
Hot Cross was recommended to me since I liked The Fall of Troy. With Hot Cross, I enjoyed the
technical riffage, abstract lyrics, and coarse vocals. I liked the use of clean guitars to produce
heavy moments instead of distortion. This band led me straight to... | 2 | | Saetia A Retrospective
Saetia. At the time I was led to believe they were the original "screamo" band (not true), and it was a
drastic change from Hot Cross's post-hardcore/emo blend. It was the same vocalist and drummer but the
music was much more ferocious and emotional. Saetia directed me to Off Minor and the other projects with
ex-Saetia members. The emo tag grew in my iTunes. | 3 | | Orchid Gatefold
More screamo, but more intense. This is my favorite screamo record to date. Of course, I
started to trace other bands with members of Orchid like Ampere. Then venturing off into bands
like pg.99 who also had albums produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge. | 4 | | Sunny Day Real Estate Diary
I didn't always want to listen to fast beats and harsh vocals. I wanted something mellow. So came
along the realtors of Sunny Day. "Diary" is definitely a classic of the genre and something everyone
who is a fan of indie and alternative should check out. I started listening to more Seattle-based
emo bands after my intro to Sunny Day Real Estate. | 5 | | City of Caterpillar City of Caterpillar
After checking out bands like Godspeed and Explosions in the Sky, I started developing more and more interest
in post rock bands. I slowly found out that post rock is a very repetitive genre with just as many imitators in the
genre as rap. Along came City of Caterpillar, blending post rock and screamo into one. Of course they aren't the
first to do this but it was a nice introduction to this perfect blend. Envy, Pianos Become the Teeth, etc. soon
followed. | 6 | | Joshua Fit For Battle To Bring Our Own End
If you haven't taken a dive into the genre or you have doubts, try this introduction. Branch out from
your little cacoon. If you enjoy bands like Touche Amore and La Dispute, chances are you'll fall in love
with the genre. If you enjoy Dance Gavin Dance and The Fall of Troy, try Hot Cross out first like I did
(although they're not really emo at all, it'll introduce you to a lot of others). You're gonna like what
you hear (eventually), I guarantee it. | |
