Prog 2012

My favourite prog releases of 2012 so far. Undoubtedly have missed some so any other 2012 prog recs are welcome.
1Anglagard
Viljans Oga

Comeback release after a very long time. Brilliant symphonic prog. If you like the 70s style
of Yes, Genesis and Jethro Tull you will love this. Musicianship is great and it's just as
good as their previous work.
2Rush
Clockwork Angels

Not much to say really apart from this is their best for a long, long time.
3Disconnect
Enough Blame To Go Around

American duo, really good heavy prog best album they've done so far. If you like Rush it's
well worth checking out as they are these guys' main influence it seems.
4Beardfish
The Void

Really great heavy prog. A harder edge to their music than previously.
5Echolyn
Echolyn (II)

Their first for seven years. Not immediately likeable and has an austere post-rock
ambience about it but it's worth persevering with.
6Astra
The Black Chord

One of the best space/psych releases this year. They manage to sound modern while
still capturing some of the essence of the 70's prog stuff.
7Amusia
Time Will Tell

Heavy indie prog. Really good debut release. If you like Rush or Coheed this is definitely
worth checking out. Title track almost feels like a cover of Xanadu at times.
8iamthemorning
~

Prog folk. Very likeable. Sounds slightly reminiscent of Kate Bush both musically and the
vocals. Free at http://iamthemorningband.bandcamp.com/
9Anathema
Weather Systems

Can be a bit cheesy at times but if you liked We're Here Because We're Here you will
probably like this although its not up to that standard.
10Hostsonaten
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - Chapter One

Symphonic prog from Italy. Nothing remarkable and pretty similair to their seasons cycle
but this is heavier than what they usually do and pretty enjoyable.
11Galahad
Beyond The Realms Of Euphoria

Neo-prog roots but seem to be leaning now towards electronic pop, even feels like prog
dance music in places. Possibly their best album, very enjoyable.
12Delusion Squared
II

Crossover prog. Easy to get into pop prog with really cute female vocals.
13The Future Kings of England
Who Is This Who Is Coming?

Laid back space rock in the style of Pink Floyd. No wow factor but gets addictive if you
let it grow a bit. If you dig classic era floyd you should give these a listen.
14Ian Anderson
Thick as a Brick 2

The original was a hard act to follow but Anderson did an admirable job here and this
captures a little bit of the magic of it.
15The Flower Kings
Banks of Eden

Their first after 5 years. Pretty good.
16Hidria Spacefolk
Astronautica

Really good heavy space rock.
17Watershed Drag
The Smoking Mirror

Crossover prog. Nice female vocals. Free at

18 Phideaux
Phideaux & Mogon

This is just a free promo release but it contains some really good stuff from a number of
his albums. Definitely worth a free download to see if it appeals to you

19Perhaps
Volume One

Another recent free album on bandcamp. There is only one track but its nearly 40 mins long
and keeps your interest with a lot of shifting rhythms and different sections.

20Big Big Train
English Electric

Symphonic prog in the vein of Genesis. Subtle and not immediately compelling but if you
give it time it will get under your skin.
21Panic Room
Skin

Yet another female fronted crossover prog band. Commercial sounding stuff with a bit
of prog here and there. Easy melodies and a laid back atmosphere.
22Hawkwind
Onward

25th album and still going, Not far off their old classics and a lot better than most of
their 90's and 00's stuff.
23IOEarth
Moments

Crossover prog, nice female voice. Uneven but some good tracks.
24Gazpacho
March of Ghosts

Not as good as some of their earlier stuff but worth a spin, if you like hogarth era
Marillion you may take to this.
25Threshold
March of Progress

Melodic prog metal. Probably their best album.
