| Brit 80's Metal (NWOBHM)
30 New Wave of British Heavy Metal picks. Some famous, some obscure, some great and some silly. Shout rif I missed any obvious ones. (note: priest, motorhead, budgie etc were not nwobhm in my opinion even tho rthey get lumped in sometimes) | 1 | | Iron Maiden Iron Maiden
well its got to be top really (Killers and Beast too obviously) 5/5 | 2 | | Diamond Head Lightning to the Nations
one of the best, definitive and essential (Borrowed Time good too) 5/5 | 3 | | Saxon Wheels of Steel
Scandinavian 101, for god's sake get your ground lights on...great band, great album
(debut ok and the 3 after this decent too) 4/5 | 4 | | Tysondog Beware of the Dog
forgotten nwobhm classic, mashup of priest and maiden, unoriginal but fucking great 4.5/5 | 5 | | Praying Mantis Time Tells No Lies
quite commercial but a great album, Children of the Earth is classic 4/5 | 6 | | Tytan Rough Justice
judas priest influences, definitely worth checking out 4/5 | 7 | | Saracen Heroes, Saints & Fools
great album, proggy edged and some maiden-like songs 4/5 | 8 | | Def Leppard On Through The Night
nothing like their sickly pop metal later on, just a naive bunch of kids playing some decent
tunes, check out 'Overture' 3.5/5 | 9 | | Heavy Petting Letting Loose
cheesy as fuck but great fun singalong stuff 4/5 | 10 | | Angel Witch Angel Witch
some filler and dodgy production but some great stuff 4/5 | 11 | | Tygers of Pan Tang Spellbound
probably their best album, solid stuff and great vocals (wildcat, crazy nights ok too) 4/5 | 12 | | Raven Rock Until You Drop
pretty raw but rocks, Lambs to the Slaughter is electric 3.5/5 | 13 | | Demon The Unexpected Guest
commercial sounding hard rock but some nice riffs, dont break the circle is great 3.5/5 | 14 | | Jaguar Power Games
uneven and rough sound but some great raw metal, and one of the shittiest album
covers ever 3/5 | 15 | | Samson Shock Tactics
Bruce Dickenson on vocals, Earth Mother is old school decent and Thunderstick the
drummer was funny 3/5 | 16 | | Bitches Sin Predator
all over the place but strangers on the shore rocks 3/5 | 17 | | Venom Black Metal
needs no summary all metalheads know it 4/5 | 18 | | Tokyo Blade Tokyo Blade
pretty generic stuff not bad 2.5/5 | 19 | | Grim Reaper See You In Hell
very simplistic but a few enjoyable tracks 2.5/5 | 20 | | Mamas Boys Plug It In
well they were Irish but worth including here, some great melodic 80's hard rock on this
with some nice violin playing, check out Runaway Dreams its an old school classic 3.5/5 | 21 | | Cloven Hoof Cloven Hoof
bad production and very patchy but some archetypal riffy nwobhm on 'gates of
gehenna' and 'laying down the law' 2.5/5 | 22 | | Gaskin End of the World
too soft really but some decent tunes 3/5 | 23 | | Girlschool Hit and Run
all girl band, corny but fun 3.5/5 | 24 | | Dark Star Dark Star
much filler but Lady of Mars and Backstreet Killer are very decent 3/5 | 25 | | Vardis 100 mph
more like 40mph, veers towards pub rock but a few decent songs 2/5 | 26 | | Savage Loose 'N Lethal
enjoyable album 3.5/5 | 27 | | Quartz Stand Up And Fight
a cut above most nwobhm musically, 70's style metal 3.5/5 | 28 | | More Blood and Thunder
straightforward likeable 80's metal 3/5 | 29 | | Trespass Metal for Muthas Vol 2
a good compilation including songs from bands who never released an album, best track
is Stormchild by Trespass 3/5 | 30 | | Witchfynde Give 'em Hell
quite flaccid but the cover is hilarious 2.5/5 | |
menawati

11.14.12 | People who think Def Lep suck, suck.
But sweet list indeed. Hold on though. When did Priest get booted from the NWOBHM crowd? | menawati
11.14.12 | they just rode the wave imo and adjusted their sound, nwobhm is a movement imo and not a genre | Chortles
11.14.12 | omg dude this is just that much more stuff to check out down the road, you are a master

11.14.12 | "although where in the name of all that is hubberd is The Number Of The Beast? Also, no Priest makes list invalid"
Number of the Beast is mentioned in 1, I didnt want Maiden to dominate the list.
Judas Priest isnt nwobhm | Atari
11.14.12 | lol menawati i've learned people don't read the descriptions in the lists they're too damn lazy. on my mario ranked list i specifically said i wasn't including paper mario or mario RPG'S and then got like 50 people asking about paper mario hehe | Jethro42

11.15.12 | 5 for maiden? mena man i thought you had higher standards than that | menawati
11.15.12 | i love maidens debut its one of my all time favorites | Atari
11.15.12 | Hell yeah and no standards are too high for maiden | ViperAces
11.15.12 | Great list man | ReturnToRock
11.15.12 | I never got how come Leppard and Venom are considered NWOBHM but Priest aren't. The former are (or became) glam rock, and the latter are proto-thrash metal, whereas Priest is full-on heavy metal.
Anyway, good list. Might want to add Hawkwind, although I guess they're more prog/space rock than metal. | ReturnToRock
11.15.12 | Also, is it just me or do Tygers of Pan Tang have the stupidest lyrics ever?
BTW - Thin Lizzy bro! | JamieTwort
11.15.12 | Priest were around long before the NWOBHM movement. | scissorlocked
11.16.12 | god, awesome list | menawati
11.16.12 | @returntorock
Some people look at nwobhm as a genre and in that case there are a some 70's metal bands that rode the wave and adjusted their sound in some cases and these are sometimes considered part of it.
Other people just see it as a movement where metal become popular again and there was an explosion of new metal bands. In that case you can't lump in priest, lizzy, budgie etc because they were around long before the early 80's.
I tend to agree with the second assessment thats all.

11.16.12 | Holy shit, it's Hans. | ComeBiteTheApple100
11.20.12 | Love Def Leppard's Mutt Lange stuff, but On Through The Night wasn't that good. High N Dry was amazing though should put that on | ComeBiteTheApple100
11.20.12 | Needs more Girl, Hell & Blitzkrieg | menawati
11.20.12 | yea high and dry is better but i wanted something on there as far removed from their pop music as possible | ReturnToRock
11.20.12 | HANS! Good to see ya, mate. Let's jam some old cheese-rock. | menawati
05.13.14 | nwob/ | mandan
05.13.14 | I personally consider Priest NWOBHM, but that's just me, and I see why someone wouldn't. It all depends on the person's definition of NWBHM.
They were mostly a pioneering force from 1974 to 1978, after that going commercial. And when Priest went commercial, most bands in the NWBHM movement rose in their wake. So I kinda like to see Priest as the pioneers of that movement. |
