33 Key(blade) Albums Of 2012

See what I did there?
1The Gathering
Disclosure

One of my favorite bands puts out yet another album I can't get enough of. The
new singer is an excellent replacement for Anneke, and Heroes for Ghosts is
probably my song of the year. Beautiful.
2Special Providence
Soul Alert

Instrumental jazz/prog metal fusion with a very spacey feel (thanks to the
keyboard synths). Surprisingly catchy (seriously, Lazy Boy has to be the catchiest
song I've heard all year)not least because the songs here all have a very
pronounced structure unlike some other albums in this genre. That isn't to say
there isn't any virtuosity to be found, as there are plenty of great guitar and
keyboard solos. Not to mention it can riff pretty hard at times.
3Venn Rain
Cymatic Cymbols

Where to start with this album1? Everything rom the masterful use of field
recordings and samples to accent the amazing atmosphere to the blissful drones
make this the ambient album of the year for me.
4Om
Advaitic Songs

It's fucking Om.
5Mount Eerie
Clear Moon

"I go on describing this place, and the way it feels to live and die"
6The Mountain Goats
Transcendental Youth

"The loneliest people in the whole wide world, are the ones you're never going to
see again"
7Shrine
Somnia

Hypnotizing, dreamy, atmospheric dark ambient. This album was intended to be a
soundtrack to lucid dreaming. I should probably try it out sometime.
8Atoma
Skylight

"The walls were torn. Stones were thrown. A breach of paradise. A hole in the sky"
9Ilyas Ahmed
With Endless Fire

Mesmerizing, droning folk. Gorgeous and hypnotic at the same time.
10Dead Can Dance
Anastasis

"We are the children of the sun. Our journey's just begun"
11Submotion Orchestra
Fragments

"So bless us all"
12BADBADNOTGOOD
BBNG2

Think I'm starting to like this one more than the first one.
13Wil Bolton
Under a Name That Hides Her

The musical equivalent of chilling by a river on a spring afternoon. Hell, there are
even field recordings of flowing rivers. Laid back.
14Beach House
Bloom

"Other people want to keep in touch"
15Beardfish
The Void

"Sleep tight my little ones, I will love you forever. Sleep in the woods my little ones,
I will miss you always"
16Witxes
Winter Light Burns

Thought Sorcery/Geography was aight, then I heard this. Wow.
17Hidden Orchestra
Archipelago
18Aves
Feathers

Bouncy, fun instrumental post-punk. It's also got a slightly cold atmosphere in parts
thanks to some slight black metal influence.
19Katatonia
Dead End Kings

Maybe I always have low expectations for new Katatonia, but I was very pleasantly
surprised with this. This is the full realization of their recent melancholic softer
direction.
20Hammock
Departure Songs

Gorgeous is one way to describe this album. Long as fuck would be another.
21Liam
MMIX

Sort of derivative post-rock from the Lantlos dude's old band. Not that I mind
though, as this can be pretty beautiful at times.
22Addaura
Burning for the Ancient
23Niechec
Smierc w miekkim futerku
24An Autumn for Crippled Children
Only the Ocean Knows

Great post/black metal. Those basslines man.
25Hypomanie
Calm Down, You Weren't Set On Fire

Lullaby for Ian
26Panabrite
The Baroque Atrium

Warm, analog synth driven ambient. Think Bocuma by Boards of Canada for an idea
of how this sounds like. Nostalgic.
27Loscil
Sketches from New Brighton
28Worship
Terranean Wake
29Spheruleus
Cyanometry

Sounds of a cool rainy day. The acoustics and the lo-fi static clipping really
heighten the atmosphere.
30Tor Lundvall
The Shipyard

Most fitting title of 2012.
31Mulm
The End of Greatness
32Whirr
Pipe Dreams

Shoegaze that wears its influences proudly on its sleeves. My Bloody Valentine +
Slowdive...yeah, I'm not complaining.
33Anglagard
Viljans Oga

Symphonic prog awesomeness.
