01.16.13 | slint - way to low |
Trebor.
01.16.13 | I've heard 17 of these, what do I win? |
WeepingBanana
01.16.13 | hahah it's alphabetical bro |
geasoftime
01.16.13 | I agree with you that they aren't that great. Look at the score I gave their new album. However, they are very popular and alot of people seem to enjoy them. There are a very visible part of the post-rock scene right now. You don't have to enjoy a band's work to acknowledge them. |
Adabelle
01.16.13 | Got every post-rock band I know on here, can't complain at all. Need to hear more Gregor Samsa |
derho
01.16.13 | I stand by my comment |
WeepingBanana
01.16.13 | list could have used a lot more shit like Shipping News and June of 44 |
Trebor.
01.16.13 | A Bunny's Caravan > |
Relinquished
01.16.13 | a lot of these anyone can live without |
geasoftime
01.16.13 | I left out te and Mouse on the Keys as well, now that I think about it. Perhaps I'll revise this into a list of 100 if enough exclusions come up |
GiaNXGX
01.16.13 | Ambient in a 'quintessential post-rock list' huh, now your genres. |
geasoftime
01.16.13 | Tim Hecker is ambient. Aglaia is ambient. Brian Eno is ambient. Eluvium isn't ambient.
I wasn't going to confine myself to a narrow definition of post-rock, because that would force me to exclude far too many bands that really deserve to be on this list. Eluvium may not be traditional post-rock, but it's close enough to be included. |
SeaAnemone
01.16.13 | nobody needs this much post-rock but if they did this list hits on a lot of the best shit nice job |
geasoftime
01.16.13 | I have all these band's discographies on my iPod. It really is overkill. But, it doesn't even account for 30% of the space, so it's no big deal. I figure I'll weed my way through it eventually and get rid of the stuff I don't like. |
minty901
01.16.13 | you need some of the newer bands in here. like echotide. especially echotide. |
Polyethylene
01.16.13 | So as a beginner to post-rock I should start off with the discographies of 75 different bands... what |
Scoot
01.16.13 | pretty much lol |
Havey
01.16.13 | really cool to see Nyctalgia on here |
minty901
01.16.13 | no, as a beginner to post-rock you should look at my list: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=481496&listid=99830 |
Polyethylene
01.16.13 | I like the genre but don't think I'd need more than a dozen or so artists on my computer, definitely not 75 to *begin* with. Can anybody condense this list down to twelve or so artists for me? |
Polyethylene
01.16.13 | Your list is looking pretty sexy minty, will have to check that all out |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | I wanted to save everyone the trouble of having to read dozens of lists to find all of these bands. I was hoping that this would make it easier for a post-rock fan to find what has taken me months to find.
Since everyone is sooo preoccupied with the title, I'm going to delete the title and hopefully the content will speak for itself. |
CK
01.17.13 | Or you could do the same thing while making the list easier to access by naming it "you all suck" |
minty901
01.17.13 | no need to get defensive. it's a good list. just a little daunting for beginners. |
toxin.
01.17.13 | |
minty901
01.17.13 | and i probably (definitely) have (way) more than 75 different post-rock bands' albums in my collection. i'm a bit of a post-rock fanatic. |
Polyethylene
01.17.13 | Well for a beginner 75 bands is ludicrous |
minty901
01.17.13 | too true. start with the earth is not a cold dead place, young team, hymn to the immortal wind and ( ). then once you've got your teeth into them, get lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven. then start to look at lists like these. |
Ovrot
01.17.13 | |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | It's not intended for post rock virgins, Polyethylene. It's intended for people who are familiar with the genre and who want to expand their collection past the basics. |
LifeAsAChipmunk
01.17.13 | where's the thread name? |
Atari
01.17.13 | what the hell lol |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | The thread name was too controversial, so it had to go. |
minty901
01.17.13 | and it will be missed god bless its soul |
minty901
01.17.13 | in terms of post-rock i'd be REALLY interested for someone to start with "for my parents" by mono. most people were disappointed by that, but if you were to start with it, i wonder if it would be the best thing ever. now to find a guinea pig... |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | I had initally titled the thread "Seventy five quintessential post-rock groups", but 'quintessential' was a too strong for everyone, so I changed it to "post-rock for beginners" to satisfy everyone. Apparently that's no good either, and so I'm at a loss what to title this.
I honestly just wanted to help people learn more than Godspeed and Explosions in the Sky. I guess this really only applies to those who are already familiar with the genre to catch the few bands they haven't heard on the list. Definitely not for an unbloodied initiate. |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | I heard For My Parents before I heard Hymn. I had only really listened to GSYBE, Silver Mt Zion, Album Leaf, and Sigur Ros before this year. I had been listening to alot of black metal before that.
I can see where people are disappointed with FMP, but when I first heard it I was actually blown away by how good it was, or how good Mono was in general. I still consider it a 4. Hymn is obviously going to be a hard act to follow, but if you don't think of For My Parents in terms of Hymn it is really an enjoyable record. |
WeepingBanana
01.17.13 | You Are There is infinitely better than Hymn though |
minty901
01.17.13 | and walking cloud is better than you are there |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | I didn't want to get into a Mono debate but I was going to say the same thing. Walking Cloud is definitely their best album. But, it's honestly such a close thing that you could make a case for any of the three. Theyre all fantastic. |
auberginedreams
01.17.13 | meanwhile back in communist russia and yndi halda rule. |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | I hope Yndi Halda continue to rule. Awake! Awoke! This Heavy Gloom was very bad. Hopefully EEB wasn't a fluke. |

01.17.13 | Sweet list. |

01.17.13 | These are my favorites
Yndi halda
Explosions in the sky
Moonlit sailor
Mogwai
65daysofstatic
God is an astronaut |
DrMaximus
01.17.13 | No Godspeed? |
minty901
01.17.13 | awake awoke was just demos and scraps that werent meant to be judged by anyone. new yndi halda songs played live and recorded by audiences are on youtube and they all sound sensational. if they release this year then it might be one of the best postrock albums ever like EEB nearly was |
geasoftime
01.17.13 | @Viral: I've never listened to Moonlit Sailor, something has always prevented me from downloading them. I think you've prompted me to check them out, though. I don't know how people can dislike post-rock so much, I never tire of it.
@DrMaximus: I wouldn't consider GSYBE to be one of my favorites either. I think F#A#infinity is one of the best post rock albums ever, but there's at least ten groups that I like more overall.
@minty: I'm heading to Youtube after I'm done typng this, in that case. I was unaware that there was new material in circulation. Do you have any recommendations, other than Echotide (I'm downloading them as I type)? |
minty901
01.17.13 | go to www.postrockstar.com. everything on there is from 2012 or later. |
SputnikSweetheart
01.18.13 | This looks like a great list! Would you mind telling me which of these groups have post metal influences? and neo-classical or jazz? I'm new to the genre and I don't know many of these bands
Thank you |
BullshitAsUsual
01.19.13 | +1 for Jizue |
geasoftime
01.19.13 | Jizue, Jaga Jazzist, and Tortoise are all very jazzy.
Kashiwa Daisuke and Yasushi Yashida lean towards neo-classical.
Red Sparowes and Russian Circles sound metal(ish), but are fundamentally post rock.
Lights Out Asia, Helios, Fridge, Aurore Rien are all Electronic/post-rock hybrids.
That's not comprehensive, just what I can come up with off of the top of my head. Feel free to message me in my shoutbox thing if necessary. I probably won't check this list again for sometime. |
DrMaximus
01.19.13 | Check out Mouse On The Keys, for some jazzy post-rock |
SputnikSweetheart
01.20.13 | Thank you very very much. I'm checking Russian Circles right now and I like what I'm hearing |

09.21.13 | Awesome. |
