Some Remarks About 2012
We're already past 2012 for a few months now, so it feels a bit pointless making my "best-of" list. Instead, I'd just like to list a few albums that haven't really received lots of attention. The more "popular" albums I liked are therefore excluded.
Disclaimer: position on this list has a standard deviation of about 5, my rating something like 0.5. |
1 | | Hidden Orchestra Archipelago
I'm surprised this album ended up being on so many 2012 lists, but of course I'm very pleased about it. Some people read my review, started recc'ing the album to other people and so on. Reccomended for fans of jazzy/trippy/electronic and the like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK2imCwfC3w |
2 | | Maya Jane Coles Easier to Hide
I can't really put my finger on it, but I just really love this little EP. It just works well, I guess. Deep House release of the year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dk_h1CSTwI |
3 | | DjRum Watermark/The Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn
DjRum does dubstep, but also so much more. His debut album will be released TOMORROW. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIqmWZE943A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPu-bh4kTK4 |
4 | | L'Orange The Mad Writer

5 | | Poppy Ackroyd Escapement
Sputnik says this was released in 2013, but not in Europe I guess. Poppy Ackroyd is a member of Hidden Orchestra, her solo debut is some beautiful, dreamy modern classical music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD3yRyj_I4M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUGadC3yf80 |
6 | | ASC Out of Sync
Techno? DnB? Ambient? Great! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1My0lfD7bI |
7 | | Ulrich Schnauss and ASC 77
Delicate video game soundtracks. No this doesn't make sense, but should it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCVbjUcksN4 |
8 | | Proxima Lie Detection/Brainstem
Ask Jash if you want more like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9nh26QpQVE |
9 | | Mala Stand Against War
Same. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWUfLtmq-Bw |
10 | | iNTRiKet The Woods
Ok, this was hyped like ****, but it's good. http://intriket.bandcamp.com/ |
11 | | Holly Herndon Movement
Herndon is working on a PhD in electronic music and you can notice it: sometimes this album becomes a bit too... "intellectual". But she definitely has interesting and fresh ideas + she is strong defender of the personality of electronic music. Cool lady. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frmJKaPT5U8 |
12 | | Ikonika I Make Lists
Metallic and fun dubstep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpcLjpu3-1g |
13 | | SX Arche
"Dream pop? Man, I heard Beach House and it's so BORING". Yes, but SX is way catchier. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUzfzxRAsdY |
14 | | Balthazar Rats
This has like more reviews than ratings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFBc1yQfIzQ |
15 | | Chvrches The Mother We Share
Is this band really special? Not really, but they can make insanely catchy, high-quality electropop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j73ZGLKu9Sc |
16 | | iTAL tEK Nebula Dance
Not as good as some previous work, great nonetheless. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfo7m4W4f5I |
17 | | Goose Control Control Control
EBM with Guitars? Alt Rock with electronics? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h6Esgk7u_o |
18 | | Kate Simko Kabuki Drop
Chicago's Kate Simko has quite an impressive back catalog, both in Minimal Techno as Deep House. But for now, her latest EP is great enough. Deep House done well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr_7IWda91w |
19 | | Lindstrom Smalhans
Fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cuzRnFi_eQ |
20 | | Nina Kraviz Nina Kraviz
The third lady making Deep House on this list. Not everything on this album is great, but when I'm in the rigt mood... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-OTl-rP1-M |
