05.12.13 | The Shining where Jack goes to the bar and he's looking directly at the camera and he says "Hey Lloyd." |
Eloriaz
05.12.13 | Oh yes, that is one of my favorite scenes of The Shining! Jack and the ghostly barman. |
tempest--
05.12.13 | It's not really that scary in itself, more so that it was almost as if he was talking to me.
Plus it was late at night when I was watching it, all the lights were off in my house, everyone was in bed and it was on a 50" TV. |
InfamousGrouse
05.12.13 | the part at the end of that Insidious clip you picked was just a cheap jump. I found the old photographs the most disturbing, and some of the off-camera figures that some people totally don't notice.
Worst part in the Exorcist is when Regan talks to the younger priest using his dead mother's voice, now that's fucked up |
baldymort
05.12.13 | Agreed hard about 1. Almost have a stroke every time I watch that scene. |
TMobotron
05.12.13 | Sweet music list and list in general. Mulholland Dr. scene is the shit btw, nice having that at #1.
I disagree with some of these but love some of the others.
I normally like my horror to be brooding and creepy/eerie to create a real sense of fear/dread rather than big shocking scares which I find kind of cheap, so part of me agrees w/ Infamous about the Insidious clip but I just thought the placement of that scene was so well done that it's still cool. Shame about the end of that movie since the rest ruled. |
Eloriaz
05.12.13 | @Infamous
Yeah, I forgot about that. You mean the scene where the mother shows how the witch lady has haunted her son in his childhood, right? Those photos were scary! |
BigPleb
05.12.13 | Agree with 1 so hard.
List needs a feature. |
Eloriaz
05.12.13 | Cheers guys. Glad you enjoy #1 as much as I do =] |
Wombat988
05.12.13 | HOLY EVERYTHING. WHY THE HELL DID I WATCH 1? |
Eloriaz
05.12.13 | @TMobotron
Yeah I understand your point ^^ Have you seen #2 though? I think this one (in that it's a scare jump) is so crazily and well-done. Like a climax, you know what I mean? But thanks!
@Wombat
Don't worry you're not alone!!!! |
InfamousGrouse
05.12.13 | "You mean the scene where the mother shows how the witch lady has haunted her son in his childhood, right"
Precisely yeah, shows her development from a camera blur to distinct prominence.
#1 is great because you know it's coming but it still gets you. Nice pick in Jacob's Ladder too, that scene is messed up. |
InfamousGrouse
05.12.13 | "Shame about the end of that movie since the rest ruled."
Insidious is weird for me because the first half is genuinely one of the most uncomfortable late-night, high volume experiences with a horror I've had. Once it goes too supernatural, I lost interest. Plus I kept seeing the demon as being basically Darth Maul. |
Eloriaz
05.12.13 | @Infamous
Oh yeah, I think that scene from Jacob's Ladder hurts me the most spiritually/religiously/intellectually/etc. It's just so horrible and desperate :( |
Eloriaz
05.12.13 | Hahaha so I'm not the only one thinking that was Darth Maul ;) |
baldymort
05.12.13 | Lynch is the master of suspense. I remember hearing somewhere that he makes some of the actors in his movies act shit on purpose to make the audience feel as though something is not quite right and create an unsettling feeling. |

05.12.13 | I really don't want to be "that guy" but quite how you have the US version of The Ring in this list is baffling.
The "birth" seen in Ju-on 2 is scary as shit. |

05.12.13 | andcas, did 12 not scare you the first time? |

05.12.13 | well yeah, the movie sucks but I've always found the premise of that scene a bit unsettling. |

05.15.13 | (about david lynch) "I remember hearing somewhere that he makes some of the actors in his movies act shit on purpose to make the audience feel as though something is not quite right and create an unsettling feeling."
I'd be interested in seeing the source for that, because although I know he does it intentionally in some of his work, I think it's for different reasons.
When he does this in Twin Peaks it's to create that big juxtaposition between the happy and quirky small-town aspect of TP and the seedy underbelly that gets exposed as the series progresses.
With Mulholland Dr. I think Naomi Watts's overly-chipper acting is to show that the life she's dreamed up in her head is her idealized but unrealistic happy world, and the when she wakes up she's a realistically depressed mess of a person. That movie was intended to be a TV pilot though so it's hard to say for certain what the overall intent would've been if it had turned into a show. |
Eloriaz
05.15.13 | @andcas
Good call about "The Strangers". I actually simply forgot to mention this movie, because I have
watched it twice in the past and I liked it, especially and of course the first half.
@DanielNight
I have some kind of a soft spot for "The Ring" US because I was very young when I first watched it
(the film was released in 2002 and I was born in 1992). Scared me to death personally. That being
said, I've never seen the original. I mark your words and will try to find it in the future ;)
@Hawks
Well, I haven't watched the sequels for "Paranormal Activity". I figure they are not very good. How
can they make so many sequels? I think this is a concept for one film only. But yeah, I though the
first one (like the first "Saw") brought something to the table. Maybe it was sketchy, but I thought
it nice to try a new thing like this. And it worked for me because #9 still gives me the creeps
:P
@TMob
Very interesting, I do remember Naomi Watt's character being very very joyful in the first half of
the movie.
Sorry for my late answers, hope you read them anyway ^^ |

05.15.13 | i have 5 and 1 and never watched 5 because im frightened |

05.15.13 | Yeah, #5 is incredible (not just the scene of course but the whole movie). |
SanguineCream
05.29.13 | I really can't think of many that scare me much anymore.
Although I think a classic scene gone un-mentioned would be Reagan scuttling bent backwards like a
crab down the staircase in The Exorcist. I've never found most of the movie "terrifying" living up
to it's overblown reputation, just more unnerving and interesting (It's also brilliantly crafted and
acted). But there is just something so disjointed and creepy about the way she moves.
Another genuinely creepy scene is in a movie called "Communion" based on the author Whitely
Strieber's apparent true story about alien abduction at his log house. The movie's rather low budget
and minimilistic but it works in it's favor somehow. There's a particular sequence involving the
beings that enter his bedroom and a flying toy robot that scared me shitless as a kid. And
Christopher Walken has always wierded me out.
Also worth mentioning are those fucking devil muppets in one episode of The Story Teller. Shit.
You also mentioned one of my favorite films of all time! The Shinning is quintessential
horror man, although it doesn't scare me so much, probably because i've seen it at least 30 times! |

05.29.13 | Still have to say the torture scenes in the Poughkeepsie tapes is one of the most terrifying thing I've seen in a movie |
InbredJed
05.29.13 | good list man, and damn straight having Lynch at #1.
The Laura Palmer Murder scene from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is probably up there too
Event Horizon too! |
Hyperion1001
05.29.13 | bet you losers dont even know when a stranger calls was a remake |
InbredJed
05.29.13 | no Polanski? |
Eloriaz
05.29.13 | @Sanguine: The spider-walk scene does come as unexpected and I think it's awesome. And yeah that must be why The Shining doesn't scare me much. I've also seen it so many times :P
@InbredJed: Thanks! I have not yet seen Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, but I will do soon! I've been on a Lynch streak recently. I watched "Eraserhead" and "Lost Highway" after making this list. Eraserhead is soooo creepy, and I absolutely love the Mystery Man scene in Lost Highway. Could have put both on my list to be honest. As for Polanski, I don't know him much. My father told me about "Rosemary's Baby" though, looking forward to see it. Any other I should look for?
@Hyperion: Actually, #12 is the original 1979 movie, not the 2006 remake. |
apert
05.29.13 | the only one of these i've seen is Saw, and i didn't think it was that good. Not really a horror film fan to be honest |
oltnabrick
05.29.13 | apert check Alien, its not super gory and violent. its a good movie |
apert
05.29.13 | yeah if i was gonna check out one it would be Alien, will probably watch the shining as well at some point since everyone rates it |
Eloriaz
05.29.13 | @apert: Yeah, you kind of have to be into the genre to like a film like this. But I tell you, the
first Saw is still much, much better than its sequels.
@oltnabrick: I do think Alien is extremely well-done and fun! |
oltnabrick
05.29.13 | yah shining and alien are my two favorites from this list |
BillTheButcher
05.29.13 | the final scene of sleepaway camp was so freakin peculiar it got me on edge. if you havent seen it don't spoil it for yourself. the movie also happens to be hilarious too.
The scene with the batteries in the original child's play was awesome too.
or the closet scene in the original halloween.
Good list and thanks for the youtube clips! |
oltnabrick
05.29.13 | this is probably my favorite scary scene, its from Exorcist 3

05.29.13 | @Bill: Thank you =) And thanks for the recs man, I'll check them out! I just hit them up on Wikipedia, all three sound like "cult" movies, which I usually love. Looking forward to watch 'em. |
Eloriaz
05.29.13 | @oltnabrick: Oh yeah!!!!!! Like I said on the list, it really is my favorite jump scare to this day. I can watch it over and over again, each time it sort of "gets" me and sends a shiver down my spine. AND THAT SOUND!!!! What is that screeching, noisy, horrible sound? Just awesome. |
InbredJed
05.30.13 | Rosemary's Baby is a great place to start for Polanski, although I wouldn't really classify what he does as horror. I also enjoy Chinatown, The Ninth Gate, and Knife In The Water. |
oltnabrick
05.30.13 | o haha i didnt see that you had Exorcist III on your list |
Eloriaz
05.30.13 | @InbredJed: I'll start with and watch these during the summer. Thanks =]
@oltnabrick: hehe ;)
@BillTheButcher: I saw "Sleepaway Camp" today. Crazy and memorable ending hahaha!!! That face.................. oh my God |

05.30.13 | Btw man, i can't see which movies you've listed for your topic. just a list of your favorite
electronic albums (?) Glich |
Eloriaz
05.30.13 | Thanks guys. And I agree SteelErected about the Exorcist III, the Nurse Station scene isn't the only scary scene in that movie (though it's the most "spectacular" of course) and the movie is just well-done and interesting. Brad Dourif is so evil in this too :O
@Sanguine: Oh, that's weird. You mean you can't see the descriptions I gave for each? And yes some of these are some of my favorite electronic albums ^_^ |
SanguineCream
05.30.13 | Doesn't matter man.
Don't know if you've listed it already but there's this scene from "The Poughkeepsie Tapes"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p766kZ7wT7Q
Thought most of the movie was bs, but that scene's pretty menacing |
Eloriaz
05.30.13 | Holy wow! What did I just watch? Thanks for the clip man. That was scary, I've never seen it before. Brb I'll go watch it a second time. |

05.30.13 | Chill out guys, it's alright if you don't like them. Any recs for me?
I saw the Blair Witch Project so long ago, I think I was a kid, so I'll have to re-watch it! |

08.04.13 | Bump! Guys, if any of you read this, go see "The Conjuring" if you can. It's directed by James Wan who also made "Insidious". I liked it even more than the latter and it's scarier :O |
