05.29.13 | basically copy/pasted this list from this site
http://incorrectpleasures.blogspot.com.au/2009/01/famous-synaesthetes-or-possible.html
also worth pointing out there's a distinction between music-colour and sound-colour (which i didn't realize till the end of the list and couldn't be fucked fixing)
also if you check the site you'll notice there actually are different kinds of synaesthesia i just didn't realize that literally all of the musos would have the same type. And yeah will probably fix errors and update the sound-colour peeps later... probably |
scorpiusx
05.29.13 | I'm pretty sure that Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange" is a reference to Synaesthesia, and how he viewed the summer where he first fell in love in orange tones. |
Pestiferous
05.29.13 | dude i love aphex twins' piper at the gates of dawn |
oltnabrick
05.29.13 | skateboard p is an amazing guy
|
grizz
05.29.13 | @Pestiferous Yeah dude but i think he did a way better job on Dark side of the moon tbh
@Scorpius that's pretty cool, does that mean he has it as well? |
scorpiusx
05.29.13 | I suppose that he has it, since the album refers to how he saw that time in his life in shades of orange. If he doesn't have it I would be surprised. |
grizz
05.29.13 | @scorpius true, would google but can't be fucked |
Cygnatti
05.29.13 | I wish I had synesthesia or however you spell it (too lazy to check on phone) since I already love music so much. Supposedly anyone can get it at seemingly random times though. Such a cool trait/disorder. |
Cygnatti
05.29.13 | Any sense combined with taste has got to be weird as fuck. Tasting music. Tasting color. Wow. |
Kman418
05.29.13 | my brother has music to color, talking with him about it is fucking crazy |
TheCollectiveFacade
05.29.13 | cool list |
ChuckyTruant
05.29.13 | Different bands, albums, genre's, sounds etc definitely paint a different color in my mind |
Insurrection
05.29.13 | pretty much the only brain condition i can imagine being really cool |
Cygnatti
05.29.13 | "my brother has music to color, talking with him about it is fucking crazy"
omg!!!! |
Cygnatti
05.29.13 | so wait, it didn't matter that Beethoven couldn't hear anymore, he could fucking see the music!? |
ChuckyTruant
05.29.13 | I'm not sure if I have music to color, but I always assumed that other people got that from music |
Veldin
05.29.13 | This is quite interesting. |
grizz
05.29.13 | @chuckytruant could be legit man, apparently a lot of people who have it just assume everybody sees it
@cygnatti wierdist version is called mirror touch basically if somebody else punches a wall, pats someone on the head etc. the person with mirror touch feels it.
@kman that's pretty fucking awesome dude, and yeah i kinda wondered what it would be like to talk to someone with it coz for them it just is y'know.
it's also interesting coz they can kinda tell with other musicians, like one of the people in the list (i forget who) but they mentioned that they loved listening to hendrix coz it was just layers of colour to them (appparently that's where the name for purple haze came from) |
Azn.
05.29.13 | "Music-sound Unconfirmed"
huh? |
grizz
05.29.13 | also i kinda think you can tell a bit from there music just as a layman coz listening to bjork, the red paintings and hendrix (the only ones i'm really familiar with) they just kinda have these layers to them that you don't really hear much of from other people. Idk tho i might just be thinking about it to much now. |
grizz
05.29.13 | @azninva yea that's my bad fixing now |
ChuckyTruant
05.29.13 | And Cygnatti if I understand correctly I don't think that is how it works. |
ChuckyTruant
05.29.13 | Yeah I just went through some random songs through my iPhone, vey interesting. I had always gotten this before but never knew it was this neurological condition. |
Cygnatti
05.29.13 | Lol, I know chuck. And if you can see it I envy you. I saw a short documentary a few years ago, and nothing about the documentary suggested that people saw the same thing or colors when listening to the same phrase or measures over and over. Seemed kinda random.
However, the people with taste-sound did experience the same taste when confronted with the same melodies/notes/scales, etc. one of them actually said that she didn't like c minor scales because they were so sour or bitter. |
Cygnatti
05.29.13 | But really, chuck, when you listen to music or hear sounds, does the color in your vision change or some weird colorful lights or shades appear? Because most peoe don't have that (unfortunately). |
grizz
05.29.13 | @cygnatti yeah coz the senses get mixed up so when you think about it, it kinda sucks worse coz it
would be kinda like getting partially blinded.
@chucky well there's supposed to be a significantly higher ratio of people who have this condition and
end up doing something musical or art related, (and being good at it) so if your in a band or
something that's a pretty good thing for you to have. |
Cygnatti
05.29.13 | I feel like sound-taste people are the ones who came up with calling shit things like bubblegum pop or describe sappy ballads as 'sugary sweet', and etc.
It'd be hilarious if they did because it'd make sense for them lol. |
Ire
05.29.13 | bob dylan |
grizz
05.29.13 | @cygnatti it's not something that you necessarily see as a physical thing, (tho it can be) a lot of the time it's more like a completely involuntary association. For example you'd hear a certain chord and no matter what you're doing you'd start imagine the colour blue as vividly as you'd imagine something that you're actively trying to imagine. (or at least that's what it seems to be) |
wacknizzle
05.29.13 | I like hearing music that creates pictures and colors in my head/creates a visual aspect out of sound. As a guitar player/musician/writer I've been working really hard to put that into a music as well. Just can't wait to be able to record it legit. I guess I do have Synesthesia, never thought much about my ability to see sounds. I used to just think Synesthesia was something that could happen while tripping.
|
grizz
05.29.13 | @wacknizzle that last bit is kinda true apparently if you drop a shitload of acid you get a form of
synaesthesia, but it's not quite the same as legit synaesthesia. Also i'm not sure if it stays with
you or if it only lasts while tripping.
Also apparently Devin Townsend has it as well |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | "But really, chuck, when you listen to music or hear sounds, does the color in your vision change or some weird colorful lights or shades appear? Because most peoe don't have that (unfortunately)."
It's kinda like that, now that I'm actually aware of whats going on in my head its more like the music is wrapped up in this aura of color that changes with every new sound the song presents. For instance I was listening to Pink Floyd's "Echoes" earlier and that went from black, grey type colors, being very bleak and dark to more of a dark blue and dark green as the song progressed.
"@chucky well there's supposed to be a significantly higher ratio of people who have this condition and end up doing something musical or art related, (and being good at it) so if your in a band or something that's a pretty good thing for you to have."
That's funny because music is pretty much my life, as anyone on here could guess anyway, I'm almost always listening to music and when I'm not I'm most likely playing guitar, bass or piano. Bass and piano not quite as much as I don't own either of those myself but I have a few guitars and I play all the time. I also write my own music when I feel I have something good in my head. I also am going to major in music in college haha |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | So it now makes sense as to why I put such a importance on album covers because for me anyway, the color of an album cover can a lot of times make me see that color whilst listening to that album. I think many artists that do these album covers must also be Music-Color. Any who, album covers are important. My favorite ones are blue ones and those are almost always albums that are very lush and typically much happier(ie, lots of major scales and major keys etc etc) a good example off the top of my head is Corelia |
Cygnatti
05.30.13 | "@cygnatti it's not something that you necessarily see as a physical thing, (tho it can be) a lot of the time it's more like a completely involuntary association. When I mean "seeing" I mean that he can literally acknowledge or detect a noticeable change. When you put "imagination" in this equation, you've unloaded the literal definition of "seeing" or "vision" meaning that the music they're seeing is a literal reflection of the light that enters their eye and is decoded into their brain. however, people "seeing" things doesn't always reflect reality. for example, when someone takes drugs, they "see" things, shades, etc. differently. things that don't reflect reality, but their perception depicts it.
yeah, the music doesn't actually change the color of the air or things around them, but they perceive it to be so. music does actually change what they're "seeing" considering vision implies/requires perception and not necessarily reality. |

05.30.13 | Album covers are my thing. It's a pet peeve for me, I just have to have them on my ipod and such. I feel like good album art should convey the tone and mood of the music itself; either that, it should be thought-provoking otherwise or even totally contrast the main feel of the music. Take A Lot Like Birds' Conversation Piece. Now THAT is one hell of an album cover. Brilliant art. Brilliant band too. |
Cygnatti
05.30.13 | I don't get how you guys could assume it's normal. when discussing music, no one ever says shit like, "oh yeah, this album has really bright colors and shit" considering they're talking about sounds and not light lol. |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | right on the mark, it changes your perception of what you are hearing/greatly enhances your perception. its another way of feeling the music I suppose |
Trebor.
05.30.13 | Yes but how many never-nude musicians can you name? |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | For me az, it's less of the contents of the cover and more of the color and the colors tone that makes up the album cover |
Cygnatti
05.30.13 | "For me az, it's less of the contents of the cover and more of the color and the colors tone that makes up the album cover"
me too. it depends on the colors, brightness/texture/etc., how many, how they contrast or compare with each other. but designs are great too. I also enjoy very dark or black and white covers. sometimes, they don't really mean anything to me, but they often do. |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | agreed. I tend to like covers with more color though, instead of black and white ones. However Meshuggah's Catch33 has the perfect cover for how it sounds (IMO). Whereas their album, Nothing is way off haha |
Azn.
05.30.13 | The whole design should be important imo
It's not just the color, but a mix of composition, content, and color. Everything has to come together to make an interesting album cover. |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | well yeah, but from my perspective the color is most important |
eternium
05.30.13 | Make them all listen to Loveless. |
oltnabrick
05.30.13 | pink
|
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | Though some music is certainly more colorful than other music, if that makes any sense |
BlueW
05.30.13 | I always get a bit of yellow to greeny shades whenever I listen to Bach. Deafheaven's shit is mostly grey and bluey like envy which is why I can't give it a high rating. |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | Listening to really busy, catchy and melodic metal bands is like watching the newer Star Trek's, lots of color, lots of lens flare, lots of awesome |
oltnabrick
05.30.13 | what the hell, shut up |
wacknizzle
05.30.13 | I think the rhythm of the music plays a big part in the visual aspect as, atleast imo. They usually create shapes, the melodies are the colors.
But this is one of my attempts at creating a song including a visual presentation.

05.30.13 | dude dale listen to Corelia with me |
grizz
05.30.13 | @cyg yeah i only said that coz i thought you meant literally seeing colours as a hallucination, but yeah we're on the same page.
"Album covers are my thing. It's a pet peeve for me, I just have to have them on my ipod and such."
This. I fucking hate how people don't put any album covers on their ipod. Also i looked up that album and that is some sick artwork. |
Azn.
05.30.13 | :D cheers m8
Yeah it bothers me so much...I love looking at album arts lol
I feel as if I could write a college thesis on them. |
wacknizzle
05.30.13 | I'll give a another chance Chuck. But I wasn't into the vocals that much when I first heard it. Instrumentally it seemed pretty interesting. |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | I love his cleans, and I don't mind his growls, but yeah anyway top notch instrumentally |
grizz
05.30.13 | Yeah, I doubt I get as much out of it as chucky others with synaesthesia but it just adds so much to the album imo |
Azn.
05.30.13 | better than your latest album |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | it does, now that I realize most other people don't experience these things. Although Corelia's work is so good it doesn't even matter haha |
grizz
05.30.13 | random questio chucky, are you bad at math and/or left-handed
@lately cool story bro |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | Nope. I don't consider myself good at math tho lol |
grizz
05.30.13 | haha yeah just curious coz it's supposed to be a bit of a theme for peeps with synaesthesia to suck at math and be lefty's |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | Haha yeah I noticed those questions while doing a test for the condition |
grizz
05.30.13 | haha i didn't realize it was a legit part of it, i thought it was just coincidence.
|
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | haha yeah idk |
Cygnatti
05.30.13 | Omg. I'm madly in jealous if you guys right now. I'm so tempted to try to fake one of those tests just to find more information about this! |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | lol |
Cygnatti
05.30.13 | I'm on the phone right now and it seems like some of them aren't working on the phone. |
ChuckyTruant
05.30.13 | ??? |
