05.31.13 | Never heard Neutral Milk Hotel. Everyone on Sput is constantly talking about it but it doesn't seem enticing. |

05.31.13 | Yeah. I'm not sure if I'll like the one good album all that much, but I suppose it deserves a listen. I suppose Slint's Spiderland could've made it onto the list. |

SitarHero
05.31.13 | "8 have an album coming out this year.."
Woah! Really? Sweet!
@Omni: I didn't really have any criteria. I just went with bands who put out one great/really good album and then either fell off the face of the earth or put out (subjectively) not that great albums after that. Personal taste notwithstanding. I thought Sketches was mostly live recordings and demos of songs that were going to be on a second album. |
StallionMang
05.31.13 | 3 words- My Bloody Valentine. |
omnipanzer
05.31.13 | Not to be argumentative but Sketches was an almost completed album originally to be titled My Sweetheart The Drunk (A joking reference to Joan Wasser). I think the band was on their way to button it up when he died. I actually prefer the content on it to Grace which I've never been a huge fan of. I think New Year's Prayer is better than anything on Grace, but I know I'm alone here. Oddly enough I only know of Jeff Buckley because of Wasser, she was a member of a popular band in the Boston indie scene back in the 90's. ;-) |

05.31.13 | No way, about everything from My Bloody Valentine is amazing, at least from "Ecstasy". The "You Made Me Realise" EP might be even better than Loveless |
SubtleBody
05.31.13 | I didn't read the comments to see if this had been said, but Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk was better than Grace |
BillTheButcher
05.31.13 | nailed 3EB and Hootie. if there is a party with 5 or more of my peers there, a song from 3EB s/t will emerge and the place will go nuts. |

05.31.13 | THANK YOU! Man, I was starting to feel pretty darn old and decrepit here with everyone going, "who the heck is Hootie?" |

05.31.13 | yeah this site's users make me feel like an old man too.

05.31.13 | Grace is my favorite album of all time for the moment, but he did have a number of excellent posthumous releases (most people refer to Sketches, but the Legacy Edition of "Live at Sin-E" is even more phenomenal.) Buckley is still a great addition to the list though. Otherwise, agreed on Neutral Milk Hotel (though I haven't heard their stuff outside of ItAOtS.) |
SitarHero
05.31.13 | Hmm sounds like I need to find Sketches and give it a listen. |
StallionMang
05.31.13 | @scorpiusx Don't bother with NMH's other work, none of it comes close to Aeroplane. |
scorpiusx
05.31.13 | Sketches is more of a show of the potential of what could have been, since everything is so rough and there is some relative filler (though "Everybody Here Wants You" is Grace-level in quality.) Live at Sin-E Legacy Edition is two and a half hours of Buckley at a cafe with just his guitar and some reverb, owning cover after cover, delivering prototypes of his Grace material, and interacting with the dining audience. Live at Sin-E Legacy rules. |
scorpiusx
05.31.13 | And thanks Stallion, I have more than enough music to wade through anyway. ;P |
SubtleBody
06.01.13 | The first disk of Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is undoubtedly Jeff Buckley's best work. The second disk is just a bunch of rough demos he recorded by himself and they're fun every once in a while but they're not essential.
Live at Sin-e is the best live album of all time and is also essential Buckley. |
scorpiusx
06.01.13 | SubtleBody, I agree with most of your statement, except that Disc 1 of Sketches has nothing on Grace in my opinion. But it's still pretty good. |

06.02.13 | 9 is sooooooo good, wasn't Hot Cakes any good? |
ILJ
06.02.13 | I'd say Refused maybe. Not that STFTFOD isn't good, I just think they're more of a "one album" band because everybody is all over Shape's dick (and with good reason) |
SitarHero
06.02.13 | Hot Cakes is a good comeback album and a thousand times better than One Way Ticket, but it's much more laboured than Permission to Land. |
Antonius
07.04.13 | I thought you were going to mention one-off albums in the sense that its a band's sole album... |
ReturnToRock
07.04.13 | Dude only 2 of these bands actually only have 1 album :/
What about X-Ray Spex? The LA's?
Also, I second Hot Cakes being The Darkness's best. They embraced their status as a joke band and wrote some good songs. It annoys me that people still react to me recommending that album by singing "I Believe...", which IMHO is one of their WEAKER songs (as most singles tend to be.) |

Sorry about the title being somewhat misleading title, but 4 of these artists (Sex Pistols, Lauryn Hill, Mad Season, Atomship) and Buckley had an album of unfinished material released posthumously.
And The Darkness have always embraced their status as classic rock parodies, but Hot Cakes sound like they're trying too hard to be funny while Permission To Land sounded effortless, if that makes sense. |
