06.05.13 | Your first vinyl was 38.60 in USD? Yeah that's pretty pricey I'd say. You can find most under 25.00 |
Captain North
06.05.13 | I just started this year too *hi 5* although I'm mainly getting hardcore stuff. Lol Keane. |
sblevins95
06.05.13 | I also started this year haha trying to get all the Incubus albums, luckily I got King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King too |
Irving
06.05.13 | With the discount it came closer to USD 32.50; might it just be a label/band thing though? Because that Kurt Vile vinyl was RM 75.90 (about USD 24.60). |
Captain North
06.05.13 | Most vinyls in Australia are between 22 and 35 bucks. It's cos we live on the other side of the world Irving, so shipping costs a bomb |
Irving
06.05.13 | Ah, ok, that makes sense. That makes it sound like vinyl pressings only ever happen out "West", which is interesting. I guess the market over here isn't as well developed?
Also, for a guy named Captain North you don't live very far up north do you hahahaha. |
Captain North
06.05.13 | Most of the time it gets pressed where the band is based. It's a niche market over here, and at least in Australia a relatively small population.
Haha, well my heritage is from up north. So I guess that counts |

06.05.13 | lol i knew where u got 3 even before i read the description |

06.05.13 | OMG ENGRISH FAILLLL bahahahhaha |
InbredJed
06.05.13 | Thats cool, vinyl can lead to very deep fits of auditory satisfaction.
I had to start my collection over again, so now I only have Tomahawk Box Set, Pixies - Bossanova, Real Estate - Days, Tom Waits - Closing Time and Neil Young - Decade. |
DominionMM1
06.05.13 | stop now, man. it's a money pit. |
Captain North
06.05.13 | I'm hoping there's auditory satisfaction. I can't afford a decent vinyl player and won't for years so my collecting is a long term investment haha |
InfamousGrouse
06.05.13 | 2 is great, summer jamz |
Irving
06.05.13 | Why are you restarting, Inbred? Did you lose your original collection or something? (ouch!) |
SeaAnemone
06.05.13 | oh my you're gonna spend a lotta $$$$ |
clercqie
06.05.13 | Nice picks man. The Kurt Vile album is one of the better albums I've heard in a long time and it sounds just gorgeous on vinyl.
If you get lucky and find a decent second-hand turntable, definitely go for that. But know that the second-hand market is a bit of a minefield (for tables, as well as for records). I didn't take the risk and went for a new Audio-Technica AT-LP120, which is a perfectly good starter table that won't drill a hole in your bank account and will still last you a long time. Try to get a decent (second-hand) amp and speakers, and know that you can always upgrade later on in life. Just being able to listen to records is already something, so don't be overwhelmed by the advice you'll find on audiophile forums, that promote all the super-fancy, but way too expensive tech.

clercqie
06.05.13 | Oh, and apart from very few exceptions I won't buy a record if it's over 20 euros. Setting an upper price limit for yourself really helps keeping your budget sort of under control. And know that if you look hard enough, you can always find a record at the right price. |
Irving
06.05.13 | @ Clercqie - Ok, that sounds like absolutely solid advice. May I know how much your entire set-up cost you? I understand that AT-LP 120 alone goes for about USD 250?
Elsewhere, I have to report that most of the vinyl records I've seen in Malaysia cost around 30 Euros - I think our geographical location and associated import costs have something to do with that =/ |
DominionMM1
06.05.13 | it's all about the cartridge |
clercqie
06.05.13 | Well, the turntable cost me 250 euros, and I lucked out because it was the version with the AT95E needle. And the rest of my set-up didn't cost me anything, because my receiver and speakers are from my dad's old stereo set-up, haha. But I figure you can find something similar for around 60-70 euros second-hand. Go digging through some thrift shops! Or you could start off by just connecting the AT120 to your pc, because it has an internal pre-amp, but you'll be obviously sacrificing some audio quality for that decision.

clercqie
06.05.13 | I know that spending 250 on just one piece might seem a bit much, but if you're going for a new table, that's kinda the bare minimum for something that you won't have to replace after a couple of years. |
DominionMM1
06.05.13 | second hand is the way to go. i got my table, receiver, and speakers for around $225. then i just saved up some cash and bought a quality cartridge a little later. |
clercqie
06.05.13 | Depends on were you live, really. Getting a second-hand table in my neighbourhood would have just resulted in wasted money. But I agree that a good cartridge can help tremendously. There are a lot available at a decent price point ( |
clercqie
06.05.13 | What table do you use, Dominion? |
DominionMM1
06.05.13 | i got everything off of craigslist. don't know if you guys have anything like that over there. |
DominionMM1
06.05.13 | "What table do you use, Dominion?"
my whole setup is b&o. the table is a beogram 2404, amp/receiver is a beomaster 2000, and the speakers are beovox s-45's. |
SCREAM!
06.05.13 | Vinyl prices here (Canada) vary a lot depending on where the vinyl is coming from and whether it's new or used.
At a record store I was able to get a new Chasse-Galerie vinyl for 15$CAD and a Godspeed album for 18$CAD but both those bands are from here. Some of the new metal albums can reach 30-40$ because the store has to have them imported. Used I can usually get stuff under 10$ (except my Burial vinyl that cost me 24$ but fuck it it's Burial)
When ordering online 25$ seems to be the minimum for new stuff because of how stupid shipping costs are |
Captain North
06.05.13 | Shipping costs to Oceania are typically over 30 bucks if you don't want your vinyl fucked, I've often found shipping to be twice as much as the vinyl itself. So despite the normal price being cheaper in the US, it's still normall cheaper to get it from a record store since they order in bulk which keeps shipping costs down. |
SCREAM!
06.05.13 | Damn and I thought I had it bad with 15$ shipping |
Days of Future Passed
06.05.13 | Nice, I recently got F#A#infinity and the packaging's amazing! Definitely get your hands on a copy if you dig Godspeed.
I have an Audio Technica LP-60 turntable that I bought for about CAN$125. Whatever you do, don't buy a turntable with built-in speakers because they're poorly made and sound terrible. |
SCREAM!
06.05.13 | That's actually the one I got haha and I agree it's a gorgeous little thing. Would definitely like to get more of their work.
So far, packaging wise, my favourite out of the albums I own is Marrow of the Spirit |
Days of Future Passed
06.05.13 | Haha I can imagine metal on vinyl being pretty sweet. |

06.05.13 | if it's recorded on analog it rules |
InbredJed
06.06.13 | "Why are you restarting, Inbred? Did you lose your original collection or something? (ouch!)"
Yeah, ouch is right, I lost it in a move. I used to have Disco Volante, individually signed Mastodon Box, Ghosts - NIN, QOTSA - Rated R (red edition), Damnation - Opeth, etc....
Didn't have much of a turntable setup at the time tho, theres some good info on this thread, thanks Dom! |
SCREAM!
06.06.13 | Damn...That's a pretty big loss. |
InbredJed
06.06.13 | its just stuff, but ya it nagged at me for awhile |
InbredJed
06.06.13 | oh and Huey Lewis & The News, can't forget that! |
SCREAM!
06.06.13 | I've managed to accumulate a little over 60 in about one year (a lot of it is used though) and I'd probably spend another year crying if I lost it all |

06.06.13 | TBDM's everblack is a nice purple vinyl. I almost want to buy a record player just to get it. |
clercqie
06.06.13 | "if it's recorded on analog it rules"
Yep. Don't bother with digital masters on wax, get the CD instead then. |
InbredJed
06.06.13 | will it say recorded analog on the back?
|
Irving
06.06.13 | (I need to know too) |
DominionMM1
06.06.13 | no, but most records made before 2000 are gonna be analog |
