01.29.14 | You can learn so much in a year you have no idea. If you are dedicated and actually have the drive to get good you can do it very quickly. I started playing like 3 years ago and only about a year and a half later I was playing shows, writing, and recording so I dunno you can do a lot in a year. Just keep at it and always have fun. If it's not something that is naturally enjoyable and amusing to you, you'll never make any progress. |

01.29.14 | If you play like 5 hours a day, you can be good really fast. Playing guitar in high school is nothing like learning on your own though and I say that as someone who has played for 10 years and taught as a TA for two years. Guitar in high school is slower than shit and more about teaching you how to read about 15 notes and playing really simple songs and then learning the basic camp fire chords. |

01.29.14 | As a guitar player of many years, Really, it depends all on you. If you have the time, you can knock out multiple years in one if you're dedicated enough. |

01.29.14 | Learning guitar in high school, I find, is terrible and you shouldn't rely on it. I did get a lot of help in cheap private lessons outside of school, but generally all teachers will do for you is explain what you need to learn and how you can do it. Whether or not you actually do learn is something you do on your own. Learning HOW TO PLAY THE GUITAR is really easy because you can have a lot of fun at the start just playing covers and developing technique, but learning MUSIC varies more from person to person. Of course, you hear about the people who never did learn theory, but trust me, you should make a conscious effort to do so to better your composing and improvisation. |

01.29.14 | If you practice enough, in a year you can play most anything, really. Don't expect to be able to play Buckethead perfectly but you can definitely start getting into some pretty advanced stuff already.
But really guitar lessons aren't very important, especially at the high school level. You can learn far more by yourself just using the internet. |

01.29.14 | practice practice practice |

01.29.14 | Start with some basic chords and try to play along with some easy songs. I could recommend you when learning basic chords you directly learn other ways to play those same chords (voicings) Can be really beneficial if later. Also try to understand what makes a chord, what notes make a C and what notes make a D. But in the end, like said earlier, it's really your own effort and how much time an dedication you have. good luck! |

01.29.14 | I've learned to play some cool stuff in my first year, so everything's possible.
Try some "easy" classics like Wish You Were Here. |

01.29.14 | Being a guitarist for the last 8 years, I can say that it varies from person to person, but if you put the effort in for hours upon hours per day, you can learn a ton in a year |
YakNips
01.29.14 | You learn shit fast. I've been playing for under a year and I'm in like 133 projects |

01.29.14 | Just learn the G/C9/D/EM7 combo and chicks will be all over you. |

01.29.14 | Basically been covered. All depends on you. Practice a lot and don't be afraid to look up scales and techniques on your own and you can get a lot done |

01.29.14 | "Just learn the G/C9/D/EM7 combo and chicks will be all over you."

01.29.14 | As long as you're focused you can make it happen.
If you're noodling around you won't get much done aka watching tv and just hitting strings.
Make sure you practice something beneficial to you and your playing.
Play sllllllloooooooooowwwwwwww (almost to the point of full retard... no im not kidding)
Internet has lots of lessons, scales, chords, tuning techniques etc...
You could also subscribe to Guitar World to learn the language of guitarist plus they have great lessons in there.
The world needs you!
ROCK IT! |
BigHans
01.29.14 | Everlong is fun to play but not as easy as doing that 4 chord combo where you dont even have to move off the b and high e strings |

01.29.14 | Me and my bandmate both started at the same time, and in a year he was so much better than me because he practiced for like 4-5 hours a day whereas I'd barely even make an hour a day. What you put in you get out, sounds cliched but there's a reason it's said so much. |

01.30.14 | thanks for the input guys. |

01.30.14 | You get out what you put in |
GmemberKills
01.30.14 | "You get out what you put in" I agree with this fully. I'd say two important things are always learning an mastering an entire song, rather than ending up learning random parts from a bunch of songs. Also constantly challenging yourself with what you learn. If its hard at first, practice it until it becomes easy, that is a very rewarding experience. |
