Typhoner's 2013: Albums
It's almost february, so the window to post 2013 lists is closing. Here's list of 30 (somewhat ranked) albums I think deserve some additional mention. |
30 | | Flunk Lost Causes
A remarkably consistent effort in which Flunk further solidify their sound. Lost Causes sees the band incorporating more of the trip-hop elements from their older albums into the indie sound that dominated This Is What You Get. The result is a nice balance of more "catchy" songs with electronic and trippy influences and of course Anja Oyen Vister's characteristic vocal delivery. All in all, I would consider Lost Causes to be their best album since, at least, Morning Star. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heq0iK90qX0 |
29 | | Laura Marling Once I Was an Eagle
Folk that needed quite a bit of growing for me, but now I love it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubdWPJSCbos |
28 | | Lunik Encore
Read the review to feel the emotions that are the reason to put this here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f035M00V-hQ |
27 | | Vuurwerk Me + One
Garage with indie/ambient leanings - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPn2gfWCx08 |
26 | | Old Apparatus Compendium
Genre: used-to-be-dubstep, now it's just very creepy stuff - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN5z_L9TNZo |
25 | | The Happy Guilty Pleasure
Vintage pop music made by four ladies and beardy guy. Can't be bad, right? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTaIzwonh4g |
24 | | Lorde Pure Heroine
Hyped, of course. But a main part of the hype is that this is actually really good pop music - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8Ymd-OCucs |
23 | | Ikonika Aerotropolis
As RA described it: sonic Prozac - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZEumFUAWxQ |
22 | | E.m.m.a. Blue Gardens
Garage that bleeps and bloops, Zomby style - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-vnv1oDs9s |
21 | | bansheebeat Spiral Power
An album absolutely worthy to be in every elctronic end-of-the-year list, even although it's made by "some guy on sputnik". And then he also gives it away for free! Conclusion: Rev's awesome! - http://bansheebeat.bandcamp.com/ |
20 | | Run The Jewels Run The Jewels
Crazy beats, brilliant rapping. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ5rI461KNE |
19 | | Ena Bilateral
An abstract take on drum & bass, techno and everything along the path connecting the two - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VmgvMQFV6k |
18 | | Ellen Allien LISm
"Ellen Allien making scary soundscapes" doesn't sound like something that should work but, well, it does. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhP7uu2RtbA |
17 | | Traumprinz Mothercave
Dusty house from a shadowy guy, stunning nonetheless. His RA mix is even better (but not much). - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_Ddu1OKqls |
16 | | Sorrow (UK) Dreamstone
Absolutely stunning, lush garage - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBSQSvtjxPw |
15 | | Jon Hopkins Immunity
2013's most widely loved techno album, and rightly so. The production quality is "off the hook" (clercqie) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XtqUOegCv8 |
14 | | Phase Frames of Reference
Proper fuckin' techno that gets the job done, but with enough variation to keep it interesting for home listens - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqJ6GRyFou4 |
13 | | Laurel Halo Chance of Rain
This is imo the kind of stuff Halo excells at: abstract techno, letting the machines do the talking - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5gHAXEnCR0 |
12 | | Function Incubation
Proper techno - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X2wPkGvWnM |
11 | | Chvrches The Bones of what You Believe
It was a nice surprise that these guys were able to put out an album as fun as their stuff I heard back in 2012. Another example of sonic Prozac - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSaOnwl4sFQ |
10 | | Bonobo The North Borders
Bonobo goes garage and does it well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hIQDavRD54 |
9 | | Marcel Fengler Fokus
The best Marcel in techno - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmxwyJpAYNI |
8 | | Recondite Hinterland
Gorgeous, well-crafted dubby techno/deep house - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RBCVFby96U |
7 | | Poppy Ackroyd Escapement
Piano is a highly overrated instrument (yes, I'm the son of a harpsichordist), but Ackroyd does some great things with it. She constructs all her pieces (bass, beats, melodies) by multitracking hits, plucks, taps and scrapes on a piano and the violin. I'm also going to namedrop Hidden Orchestra, of which she's a member (see it as a quality stamp). - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpVunNzvlXs |
6 | | Zomby With Love
Once again a very scatterbrained take on the hardcore continuum, once again very good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5fccx15b2k |
5 | | Felix K Flowers of Destruction
Very abstract/minimal drum & bass - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVWuvDlI_J8 |
4 | | Oathbreaker Eros|Anteros
My first encounter with the hardcore genre (although I was informed that they mix in other stuff as well), but man, what an album it is: from Caro's vocals to the perfect instrumentation: everyone's on fire here. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFALPj-F8wU |
3 | | Forest Swords Engravings
Some of those albums where people tend to start acting very weird when they want to attach genres to it. Anyway, the production on this thing is just nuts. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSYjkDW_nwc |
2 | | James Blake Overgrown
Yes, of course. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p6PcFFUm5I |
1 | | Ishome Confession
My review basically sums it up, but this was a really big surprise for me. Beautiful garage-based album from an unexpected place. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUIG8P8bvSQ |
