I'll say this though; the rate True Detective is going, it's first season will eclipse the respective openings of The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and Mad Men. Get on it YDA, can't see anyone who is a tv fan not digging this.

Faraudo 02.18.14	It's not on the same level as Breaking Bad, but if Hannibal keeps getting better (All signs point to that), it will probably achieve that level of greatness. First season was amazing, and Mads Mikkelsen kicks some serious ass as Hannibal.
YourDarkAffected 02.18.14	When I say "Up there with Breaking Bad and Hannibal" I mean that both those shows are well above your run of the mill tv show. There are still several levels of the atmosphere between Hannibal and Breaking Bad (great as Hannibal is). House of Cards is well on its way to reaching BB levels though, which is even more impressive for a show that's exclusive to netflix.

Breaking bad tries to be deep but it really isn't, just ends up with Walter White getting himself out of seemingly impossible situations using his chemistry and intellect in big action sequences. all the other characters beside Jesse are more like plot devices than living breathing characters. entertaining show for sure but not deserving of the universal acclaim in my opinion

And your point about characters being mere plot devices i just don't understand how anyone could think that. The character development is flawless. I didn't like the character of Hank at all in season 1 but he became my absolute favourite character in the show over time because the show is so good at humanising characters in ways that don't ever jolt you out of the narrative. Also in hindsight I don't think you can really compare the wire and breaking bad but people do because they're the "best" (ie most critically acclaimed) shows of their respective eras i guess. Wire is a lot more ensemble driven and is more a tale of a city, whereas BB focuses on a smaller group of people and is about those people rather than the city of albuquerque. idk theyre both amazing shows in their own rights, the only negative things i have to say are 1) walt jr is a fairly weak character and probably the closest thing to a "plot device" in the show and 2) season 5 of the wire was the least good and that's frustrating because it was the last one. still amazing.

BB is about one man finding his true passion and that it is something heinous is really the crux of how everything develops. Tony Soprano is, from the outset, shown to be that anti-hero who is still likeable because he takes care of his family etcetc but with BB it's about a good man slowly becoming twisted and how it affects everyone around him, and it's so perfectly paced that his evil creeps up on you until BAM he's watching a helpless woman choke to death on her own vomit or poisoning an infant or whatever. He's a sympathetic character who becomes vile and repulsive and it's fantastic that even through all this I STILL wanted to see what would happen to him. There have been shows where I simply haven't cared about a character due to them being unlikable but BB makes Walter so magnetic (cranston's performance also has somethign to do with that.) And there are plot arcs centered around certain peripheral characters, but agreed definitely not as fleshed out as on Sopranos. also I think Deadwood's amazing but its lack of an ending is so heartbreaking
