1 | | Karate Karate
How does this band not have way more exposure here? They were fucking awesome. Such a chill mix of jazzy indie with a heavy dose of blues influence.

2 | | Grand Detour Grand Detour
French instrumental screamo/emo/hardcore/whatever. Sounds like Kidcrash and Sed Non Satiata had a prodigious son.

3 | | Racebannon IV: Acid or Blood
The coolest avant-garde noisecore you've never heard.

4 | | Cower Land Before Time
Black Sabbath had a kid, and that kid grew up not wanting to be anything like it's parents, but then it was like, "Fuck it, I am my father's son. I will make my father proud." They play bluesy, sludgy hardcore.

5 | | Sport Bon Voyage
More Frenchies, only this time they sing. Don't worry though, it's all in English. Emo for people who don't like emo.

6 | | Remainder Remainder
Screamo band that is hugely influenced by the "original" screamo acts of the early 90's. You can taste Portraits of Past when you spin this. The title of this album is actually, "The Frozen World Thawed"
Pay-what-you-wish on their Bandcamp: http://remainderma.bandcamp.com/ |
7 | | Barrows Imprecari Island
Some of the freshest mathy post-rock I've ever heard. Don't write them off as another EITS cover band.

8 | | Fugue Years
Jazz influenced math/post-rock. Seriously one of my favorite bands ever and it's a shame they broke up before they really received any attention. I saw them play their last show with Tera Melos and Melt-Banana, and they fucking blew both of them out of the water. You could feel the crowd just aching for more.
All of their material is free on their bandcamp page: http://fugue.bandcamp.com/album/years |
9 | | No Tongue / / /
Post-hardcore with screamo influences. Features member(s) of Calculator. Sounds like a mix between Cloud Mouth and Calculator.

10 | | Chalk Talk Bad Influences
The most fun you'll ever have listening to twinkly emo. Their sound just screams 3 A.M. pool-hopping on a summer night.
Listen and buy here: http://chalktalk.bandcamp.com/album/bad-influences |
11 | | Helen of Troy The Face That Launched a Thousand Ships
Gospel before they became Gospel. A bit more straight-forward post-hardcore, but the frantic drumming and emotional screams are as present as ever.

12 | | Coffin Dancer Pax Romana
Post-metal for rookies. Atmospheric and sludgy with guttural screams and pounding drums. Everything you need to ease yourself into the genre.

13 | | Black Kites Songs Written While Things Were Changing
One of the best hardcore records of all-time, in my opinion. It doesn't get much better than this.

14 | | Baklavaa Spiral Cramp
This stuff is WEIRD. Trippy, brain-melting post-punk/noise rock. It's like the soundtrack to a bad acid trip. The vocalist ties his hair into pig tails when they play live. Pretty sure they all threw up on each other when I last saw them. If you like stuff that is out there, this is definitely for you. Plus, they have the trippiest fucking music video of all-time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGRprs2Cn2c
