New Tool Album

Guess what I found in Best Buy today? "Feigned Mortality", the fifth Tool album. Out of nowhere, stacks of this thing were laid out on the shelves. On my third listen so far, the fillers drag it down a bit but the actual songs are better than 10,000 Days.
1Tool
Wrath (10:29)

The album begins with Maynard screaming "FUCK YOU MOTHERFUCKER!" Danny Carey's pounds the shit out of the drums in his angriest performance yet. A three-minute intro begins with just Carey and soon adds in Jones and Chancellor. Maynard's scathing lyrics revolve around those who doubted him - "Waited too fucking long for this, now you got what you wanted asshole!"
2The Overlord (7:55)

Another angry track, this time the victim is religion. Adam Jones' riff builds on until Maynard's hushed cries of "God, I've always doubted you and for good reason". As his anger grows, he yells "To those who preach the book of filth, cradle the shit you stab me into". The riff builds until it suddenly goes into silence, and a bass strum leads to an explosion of sound.

The first filler, Maynard polishes his knife...
4Blade (1:17)

In contrast to the prog metal of the first two songs, Maynard ratchets up the anger in a hardcore punk-style rocker. Lyrically, it's pretty weak ("FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKER, YOU FUCKED ME x30).

Filler two - Maynard turns on a saw.
6Fist of the North (6:47)

The lead single off the album, Maynard croons melodically in a peaceful reprieve. "Find your way home, to where you belong". Unfortunately, he is telling the subject to go to hell - hardly a nice phrase. Adam's riff alternates between fast and slow, but Maynard is calm. The talkbox from Jambi is reintroduced.
7East Apocalypse (29:38)

The centerpiece of the album, Maynard tells a story of how the world ended. Split up into four sections, the song culminates into one explosion of sound.

Part I - Gas
The carbon monoxide leak wipes out America, sending the world into chaos. "Dead are the rest, you deserve it you frivolous animals. Don't give a damn about the world you live on, now it is time to repent for all your environmental sinister sins." The bass and guitar combine, leading into the...

Part II - Wave
The sea levels rise, submerging the Eastern Hemisphere. "Those who drowned, the blame is not round. See you around when I'm dead in the ground!"

Part III - Flame
"The halo burns bright, flames in the light!" The rest of the world shrivels up and dies as temperatures rise to 1000F.

Part IV: Ghost
"Blame your Christ for your own short-handed faults? Perhaps you belong in the ash!" Maynard disses those who wonder why the Earth ended the way they did - Carey's drumming is furious, and Adam yells over his riff.
8Eye of the Beholder (1:12)

An ambient soundscape. It is centered around water dripping from a faucet, except that water is Maynard making his wine.
9Reflect Again (7:03)

Maynard is calm - calm and boring. "I will reflect on my sins," he says, and his sin is making snoozers. "The years have been long, and I will find absolution for all my wrongs."
10Tranquility (4:22)

Another snoozer, Maynard is inspired by Eastern philosophy in this ode to his calm mind. "Finally I may rest, for the time has taught me well."
11Slashed (2:18)

Maynard yells and screams like a maniac. Carey's drumming is frantic and the syncopated vocals of "I HATE YOU!" create a chaotic atmosphere.
12Wrath II (8:05)

Even angrier than the opener, Maynard regains his energy. "I want to kill, stab, choke you into Hell! Kill you, if you fucking piss me off again! How dare you fucking wreck me, wreck me? A nine-inch crawling in the recesses of your brain, a saw and a blade terminate your existential gain."
