Overlooked Hip Hop Q1 2014
Everybody knows Freddie Gibbs, Schoolboy Q, Isaiah Rashad, Rick Ross,
CunninLynguists albums are dope. Check these out too. |
1 | | Ratking So It Goes
Technically Q2 but this is too dope not to include. Sporting Life is a dope producer
and Wiki can rap his ass off. |
2 | | The Doppelgangaz Peace Kehd
If you're still sleeping on The Doppelgangaz right now, stop. These dudes are the
best and most consistent hip hop duo in a really long time. They release at least
one album's worth of material a year and usually it ends up in my top 10 or top 5 of
the year |
3 | | Dag Savage E&J
Surprised to see there's not even an artist page for these guys yet. I should fix
that. Exile producing and Johaz rapping. It's like a sister album to Blu's Below the
Heavens and Fashawn's Boy Meets World |
4 | | Lakutis 3 Seashells
After years of anticipation after hearing Lakutis rap on Das Racist's mixtapes,
Lakutis releases this and it does not disappoint. If you need convincing, he's
basically a white Danny Brown. |
5 | | Kevin Gates By Any Means
I'm not sure how this dude hasn't blown up yet. He's kinda like Future/Rich Homie
Quan but much more solid lyrically. Love his gravelly voice. |
6 | | Homeboy Sandman White Sands
Need to make a page for this one too. Homeboy Sandman has a really nice run of
EP's going on right now and he's one of my favorites in the past few years. Beats
are all done by Paul White, who's most notable for producing with Danny Brown. |
7 | | Prince Po Animal Serum
This album is gonna be overshadowed by Prince Po's former groupmate Pharoahe
Monch, but this album should be checked out if you want to hear an underrated
veteran rap over some really nice Oh No beats. |
8 | | Smoke DZA Dream.Zone.Achieve
As far as weed rap goes, Smoke DZA is somewhere between being as good as
Curren$y and being as mediocre as Wiz Khalifa. This album is mostly the former, but
it should not be 21 tracks. Worth checking out though. |
9 | | Cyhi Da Prynce Black Hystori Project
This is the first Cyhi tape to really showcase the dude's talent. Other tapes have
their moments but aren't as consistent as this one. Hopefully this release will
escalate him to a higher status than "That other rapper on GOOD Music that's not
Ye, Pusha, or Big Sean." |
10 | | Step Brothers Lord Steppington
The Alchemist continues his winning production streak with a really nice album with
Evidence. |
11 | | Black Milk Glitches in the Break
This is just B-sides from Black Milk's brilliant album from last year, but it's still
definitely worth checking out. |
12 | | L'Orange The Orchid Days
This is mostly a showcase of soulful instrumentals from L'Orange, but there are
some cool verses from Homeboy Sandman, Blu, Jeremiah Jae, and Billy Woods. |
13 | | Verbal Kent Sound of the Weapon
Another artist I need to make an artist page for. He was part of the group Ugly
Heroes with Apollo Brown and Red Pill and they released one of the most overlooked
hip hop records of last year. Not as strong as Ugly Heroes, but this is cool
nonetheless. |
