05.27.14 | I think many of us here, commenting and arguing here right now, have actually widdened their music
world enough to be able to legimitely affirm through their own extended experience of music that most
of these artists deserve pretty much every credit that is given to them, you can't simply discard
every other's opnion by the experience argument of: "you haven't widened your taste enough". If soo
many fantastic artists (even today) have been able to respect, love and be influenced by the music of
figures such as The Beatles, Aphex Twin or Radiohead, it's because the actual music was soo good in

05.27.14 | "I used to listen to the Beatles but once you start listening to more music and widening your music world the Beatles start to pale in comparison."
well yea of course you'd think that since probably the majority of everything you listen to is from after their time. so many bands took elements and aspects of their sound and built on them, doing new things making them more interesting. if you find them boring or whatever fine, but calling them overrated is just stupid.
"Not a fan of the beatles, really, but I understand their importance for the time."
see gonzo knows. I know lots of people who hate the beatles, cna't stand them. but they don't deny the impact they had, even if all they did was write a bunch of "safe pop songs" |

TheBarber
05.27.14 | "there are always more things to find, that is true for everyone"
hence the use of the word "enough" when I claimed we had widened enough to be able to argue, not saying any of us here is absolute ^^
"And I am not saying that the music is bad, overrated is not bad"
overrated is not bad no, it's prob worse since overrated is basicly discarding the general statistic and consensus of others in front of yours in an objective manner (wich is worse than the subjective manner of talking about music).
"but if you are gonna proclaim someone to be the greatest there better be a really damn good reason for it. It is not just taste when it comes to that."
Hence the existence of reviewing, it permits you to voice your thoughts on records in a way that goes over simple taste, argumenting over music in a half-subjective/half-objective way. Fact: Great reviews giving damn good reasons why Selected Ambient and Ziggy Stardust are fairly timeless records exist |
TheBarber
05.27.14 | "And looking at other mediums like Film making and Art there are hundreds of people given recognition but in popular music there's only Beatles or at least nothing that can compare which strikes me as a bit odd."
What world do you live in? hundreds of artists in music manage to obtain recognition through press critics, word-to-mouth (like on this site), other artists and even online following through fans and fanzines; even recently Godspeed won the polaris prize in Canada and they aren't exactly writters of "safe pop songs" often aired. Although obviously there will probably never be any artist that'll get as much recognition as The Beatles but that's because of the multiple cultural factors at the time (let's face it, music was considered by the public in an entirely different and more important manner back then) added to their greatness and influence on rock music, they were lucky sure, but they were also important enough so that we can still talk about them today.
"Now if we are talking about influences there are many things to take into account. How would you say someone is really influential? Is it the number of artists influenced? Is it that they pioneered a genre of music? Is it some technical achievement?"
All of these, influence is very broad by essence, and the nature of the influence is even broader
"It is logical that the popular music will have the most followers and since it's everywhere, most people influenced by it."
first a distinction must be made, I'm talking about influence in terms of influence on music, not on people (music influencing people can hardly be debated imo as it's specific to pretty much every human being). Now that that's been cleared: No, it isn't logical that popular music will be the most influential on artists, simple couter-exemple: lady-gaga. Would you say she has sonically influenced many artists (here being a patchwork of influences to begin with) even though she is listened to by all. other example: Hellhammer or Venom's Black Metal, both were not part of popular music and at the time not known that well outside of small circles, yet to this day we can both hear their influence within every bm record |

Well yeah I do think it's fair to say that the very first bm and bm precursors did have influence on even todays bm. Also about: "You can't say that black metal is popular", well it's funny you say that since through Deafheaven bm is actually just starting to be part of popular music (in an apple commercials for instance, reconize that pink cover?: http://www.metalsucks.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/deafheavenapple-620x387.jpg ). ..
"it isn't logical that popular music will be the most influential on artists"
influence: the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.
It makes complete sense for a popular artist to become influential in this respect because there is a large number of people who like that artist's music, whether or not it's actually good is debatable. Example of this: Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, that album is a waste of disk space right there, however, its existence gave way for the foundation of an entire genre: noise rock, which I'm a fan of. Metal Machine Music is terrible, but it's still influential in the fact that it was still enjoyed by people who had never heard anything like it, and created their own music based off MMM.
also:" simple counter-exemple: lady-gaga. Let's hope not. Who knows what kind of abomination will that give birth to?"
There are several problems with Gaga as a counter-example:
1.This is 2014, bands like BROKENCYDE have come and gone, if you really fear an artist influenced by Gaga of all people, you are pretty sheltered.
2.an artist/album does NOT need to be good to be influential(see my MMM example) |

SharkTooth
05.28.14 | @Barber,
I agree that MMM didn't exactly give birth to the noise rock genre, since to say that any genre were
to spawn from an exact time/place/moment would be a broad overstatement. However, MMM helped bring
about the general idea of noise rock to a lot of people and remains an pretty important part of noise
rock's history, influence, and (to a much lesser extent) general sound. Yes there are things that
influenced noise rock to a greater extent, but for the sake of this argument, I'm sticking with MMM. |
