| Fav Album First Impressions
Just a thought that crossed my mind the other day. Of all your fav albums,
what did you think of each of them when you first heard them? Did you love
them straight away? Did you merely enjoy them but gradually learned to
love them? Were you indifferent, or did you even dislike them due to them
being an acquired taste? Let me know. | 1 | | Agalloch The Mantle
Initially I wasn't sold on this, I found Ashes to be more enjoyable at first because it
was cleaner and more lively, instrumentally. But as it turns out, after a few weeks I
just kept returning to this and the rest is history. | 2 | | Antonin Dvorak Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95, B. 178
I pretty much adored this from the get go, and it only got better and better with
repeated listens. Dvorak had some knack for creating incredibly infectious melodies
while maintaining a high level of suspense/intensity in his pieces, so naturally I
latched onto this pretty easily. After about a year, this became my favourite
classical piece by a comfortable margin. | 3 | | Bathory Blood Fire Death
Truth be told, I wasn't too enthralled with this when I first listened to it. The five
thrashers that were bookended by two epics just didn't sit too well with me, but I'm
glad I persevered because I now love every track on this to death, even the intro
and outro. | 4 | | Cynic Focus
As with most people, it took a little while for me to get used to the robot vox, but
everything else was basically perfect. Once I learned to stomach Paul's strange
vocoder effect this cemented itself one of my top 3 albums of all time. | 5 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor F#A# (Infinity)
Although the opening monologue gave me goosebumps, I really didn't "get" this as a
whole on my first listen, and I wouldn't get it for months and months until one
night, it just clicked. Still to this day don't know whether I prefer the CD or vinyl
version. | 6 | | Kashiwa Daisuke Program Music I
Instantly loved it. Pretty sure this was the fastest 5 I ever gave out, after about
two weeks and dozen or so listens. I understand a lot of people call this "cheesy" or
"superficial" (omfg), or even "boring" (plebs, specifically of the big variety) and
those people need to get in touch with their twinkly side because nothing twinkles
quite like this. | 7 | | Portal Outre
My initial reaction was "holy hell" followed by feelings of being watched and shit
because this is as close to terrifying as a metal album can really get. Took a long
time to cement itself as one of my all time favs, nevertheless it's still the sort of
album that needs to be listened to in a certain frame of mind, but when you do omg | 8 | | Sigur Ros Kveikur
I particularly loved Brenninsneintesinetineen and the title track because of the
darker vibes and initially wished there were more tracks like them, but I learned to
love the lighter ones just as hard. Isjaki is seriously one of the prettiest songs ever
made and I can't help but jive to it. | 9 | | Tim Hecker Ravedeath, 1972
At first this didn't really stand out to me as one of Tim Hecker's best, I always
preferred Harmony in Ultraviolet and Haunt Me, but just like The Mantle, I found
myself returning to this more than anything else in its respective discog. | 10 | | Ulcerate Everything is Fire
Believe it or not, there was actually a point where I didn't particularly like Ulcerate.
I found their sound too fragmented, too chaotic, the lack of hooks was maddening,
but I was an idiot back then and now I see the light and this album is the god damn
best. | |

07.15.14 | Yay another awesome Jac list :D. For me...
UP: Really enjoyed it first listen and just got even better, technical mindfuckery. Didn't like the vocals much but instrumentally it was so perfect I didn't care.
None so Vile: Don't remember
Epidemic of Violence: Adored it first listen, the shear vile aggression gave me a massive grin as I wondered on the most awesome riffs and vocals put into Thrash. Headbangs were performed on that day, everything I wanted from a Thrash record and more.
F#A#Infinity: Struck a chord with me first listen, had my jaw dropped by East Hastings and the intro.
Slow Riot: Didn't know what to think really, I knew this was something to invest to since it was more of an experience then an album. It got worse and worse for me so I went to Infinity, jaw dropped and went back to this. After 6 listens it finally clicked.
Symphony of the Vampire: I've never fanboyed so hard in my life when I first heard this, it's everything I ever wanted from Kamijo. Condenced, immaculate songwriting (especally transistions) with an epic concept + 30 minute music video. Thank god my parents were away when I listened to this I'll put it that way xD. Everyone who can give Power Metal a chance or enjoys it urgently needs to listen to this, AOTY for me by a mile. | CalculatingInfinity
07.15.14 | Merveilles: Didn't love this until 5 listens in. I really didn't know what to think of it, was so unique I was just trying to make sense of it all and trying to get used to Gackt's vocal style.
Catch 33: As of writing, I've never had a first listen this gripping and intense ever. I've finally gotten into Meshuggah's sound and was digging their discography alot, especally I but I had one album left, this. I was completely zoned out by the pure sonic force and repetition of the soulless, never ending riffs until Mind's Mirrors where I just went "What the fuck am I listening to", taking me through endless, bleak atmospheres I've never been so invested in an album listen. This is probably the only time ever I'd consider a Hawks rating if I was on this site when I listen to it, fucking mindblowing.
California: The usual story with this album, the grower to end all growers. Think it's cool but nothing mindblowing first listen and then you're like "OMG this is the best"
ITAOTS: Adored it first listen, emotionally invested through every note and word. This is raved enough on this site so I'll just end it there.
Blackwater Park: Same case as California really although far, far quicker and consumed my life back in year 9.
Calculating Infinity: Didn't enjoy it at all, thought it was dull, repetitive in tone and a one trick pony. It took me two years to enjoy this record, and now it's one of my 5's. Probably the most listens before I started to like an album.
Art of Life: Enjoyed it, but even when I was 12 I knew this would require many listens to fully get a grip off. My taste was starting to grow for the first time and this was a massive undertaking for me. I guess you can call this the first album I truely ever invested in. | Rowan5215
