Up is pretty bad, even for these movies.
The best of the bunch: the first Toy Story, Ratatouille, & Incredibles.
Here are a few recent computer animated flicks that are better than all of the ones not singled out above:
Wreck-it-Ralph
How to Train Your Dragon
The Adventures of Tintin
Shrek 2 (and to a lesser extent, Shrek)
Ice Age 2 (formally known as "The Meltdown")
Big Hero 6 (you guys are going to love this one...)

10.28.14 | Can't agree at all with this. Mine would probably be:
Cars
Toy Story (3 > 1 >> 2)
Up
Monsters Inc.
A Bug's Life
Ratatouille
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
never seen Wall-E
but I know no one likes Cars, I always thought it's more mature than all other Pixar films (except for TS 3 and Up). The Incredibles was damn boring for me though |

talking to me? I guess so.
Well, that alone doesn't, you're right. But those three movies have a message that can be appealing to a grown-up too in my eyes. Especially Up with that theme of how much one should cling onto a person he loves, even if she isn't there anymore. Of course, thanks to the annoying sidekicks it has its flaws, but the first 15 minutes are nothing less than animated brilliance, probably the best sequence I've seen in an animated movie. |

10.28.14 | Yeah, A Bug's Life is cool, especially cause of that stupid circus crew, but lets face it: Antz > A Bug's Life for sure, thanks to the movie theme that's about as intelligent as that of Finding Nemo. KrazyKris
10.28.14 | Never got the love for The Incredibles honestly. If you only take the pre-Cars 2 stuff it is their least imaginative movie and full of clichéd action stuff, hardly ever funny and I don't think it has any really likeable guy in it. Except for Edna Mode and Frozone of course |
hahGAY
10.29.14 | @kris i always looked at the Incredibles as a kids first action movie, kinda playing off all the cliche's |
KrazyKris
10.29.14 | I got to be fair though, not like Pixar movies aren't all full of clichés, but most of them at least have a somewhat unique setting. Back when I first saw it, I really loved The Incredibles, but nowadays it's bores me kind of. The thing is, it's still not bad, just for Pixar standards. At least it has a kick-ass villain. |
hahGAY
10.29.14 | the movie i never really got was Walle. It tried to be like a art-house movie that adults would like and didn't appeal to kids i know. that's probly my least favorite besides Cars 2 and newer. |

But I can't agree with academy on this one. I'm probably the biggest HTTYD fanboy I know (I even bought the damn artbook), but even I wasn't upset when it lost its Academy Award to Toy Story 3.
I love Cars. Looking at my list, I should've put it above Brave, actually. It combined so many of my favorite things; namely road trips, NASCAR and the recent history of Southestern America (40's/50's, considering I grew up in Las Vegas). I think people hate on it because of the southern tint it has (i.e. NASCAR and Larry The Cable Guy), and because of the merchandising monster it has become since.
Wall-E and Up are probably tied for first. Wall-E is just imaginative as fuck, which is impressive considering how much it borrows from other sci-fi movies. Imagine pitching this synopsis: "Sentient trash compactor falls in love with sentient future-tech and reintroduces the human race to plant life." But dear goodness, the emotions those robots portray, and the sense of triumph during the end credits as humans rebuild civilization...it was excellent.
I will say that those other movies could be interspersed with Pixar's, though. Definitely not that hot on TS2 or A Bug's Life. Including the movies academy listed (and a few others I just threw in myself), here's my list:
1. Wall-E
2. Up
3. How To Train Your Dragon
4. Toy Story 3
5. The Incredibles
6. Wreck-It Ralph
7. The Lego Movie
8. Finding Nemo
9. Shrek
10. Toy Story
11. Tangled
12. Cars
13. Paranorman
14. Ratatouille
15. Brave
16. Toy Story 2
17. Frozen
18. Shrek 2
19. Monster's Inc.
20. Ice Age 2
21. A Bug's Life
567. Cars 2
I haven't seen 9, The Adventures of TinTin or Big Hero 6 (super excited for this one). |
Masochist
10.29.14 | Also worth noting that I didn't care for Pixar movies until about the time Finding Nemo came out. It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I really started looking at them as quality films (I'm 27 now). |
BertMacklinFBI
10.29.14 | Finding Nemo was the first movie I ever watched in theatres |
Mythodea
10.29.14 | Imo, Reck it Ralph was a good idea, but dragged on and had too many things going on. Not that it was complicated, I just found it a bit... Extravagant for the sake of it. Wall-E is awesome but no1? Hmm, maybe. Have you guys seen the Burn-E short film? Hilarious, go search it on Youtube, I'll wait...
Newer films are not as good as the older ones, Frozen was a bit of a dissappointment and Tangled was hmm... 6/10. Haven't seen LEGO but plan on doing so, have heard a lot about it. 9 was pretty decent but in the end, not much left to think about. Yeah, post-apocalyptic environment, yeah church is bad, yeah, love and self-sacrifice. What's new?
Brave managed to step a little out of the box, if you try and look away from the rebellious teen that fights their parent and then everyone comes to an understanding.
Shrek started excellently, a movie that could appeal to both adults and children, with smart humour and many references to modern culture. After Shrek 2 it's been a trainwreck.
Cars was really good, I liked it (com'n guys, it's not difficult to see a movie just beacause the characters are car-acters [see what I did here?]) Cars 2 on the other hand... started watching it 3 times, all of which I fell asleep during the first 20 minutes. Really, don't know how it ends.
Ratatouille is a winning formula brilliantly disguised as something new, so I like it enough to have it quite high in my mind. Monsters Inc/U. were both supreme, as were the Toy Story movies (with a small stumble on the second one)
Nemo, Bug's Life, Up, Incredibles are all classics in my mind. How To Train Your Dragon varies from cute to really good. Want to see the second one, soon.
I think we're forgetting two of the best ones out there, Despicable Me and Megamind (tell me about smart humour). Despicable Me 2 failed to be equal to its predecessor but a good one nonetheless)
Ice Age - I was sure I was forgetting sth - started as Toy Story. A dynamic start, a mediocre continuation and a brilliant return. But they should have left it there. I fear it will end up like Shrek.
Paranorman? What's that? Is it good? Also, remember that cute movie named Robots? What about it guys? |
KrazyKris
10.29.14 | Robots is cool, but of course cheesy as hell. Good voice actors and a bit outside the box for an animation movie, especially at that time.
Despicable Me is cool too, thought it was really great when it came out. The three kids are probably the best ever in animation, especially the youngest. And it has some cool ideas, though honestly it is prdeictable from beginning to end and Gru is somewhat annoying over the whole movie.
Can't agree at all with Ice Age. Meltdown > the first for sure. The exact opposite of Toy Story when it comes to that.
Forgot another one, Over The Hedge. Maybe it's just me, but it was pretty hilarious. |
Mythodea
10.29.14 | All I can say about Over The Hedge is it's decent. As is Madagascar... Franly, I used to like Madagascar, but now it's a little bit.... meh... |

@Mythodea - ParaNorman is an incredibly well-put-together stop-motion movie, and super fun to watch, especially if you're a fan of kitchy b-movie horror flicks. By the end of it, I was surprised at how satisfied I was with it, and even repeated watches haven't lessened its impression on me. Since Halloween is coming up, now might be a fitting time to give it a chance ;-) |
